    I suppose I’m expecting better response times plus quieter operation. At a cost of course.

    An SSD should work but I would be very surprised if it makes any significant difference to the response time; it will certainly be quieter. If you do decide to use an SSD then look at the the TBW lifetime figures for the drive and decide if for your usage, the lifetime of the drive will be adequate. Different makes and models of SSDs have very different TBW values.
