My PVR 9300T remote cannot now modulate the volume on the TV since I changed to an HDMI cable from a SCART.
The 9300T has never been able to have its volume changed via HDMI.

For freeview, Humax introduced HDMI volume adjustment for SD programmes on its HDR-FOX T2 in 2010, which is a couple of years later than the launch of the PVR-9300T.

You could but the picture quality might suffer.
