InactiveHi, for a while now we have been getting some issues with our aerial signal, sometimes the picture goes on and off lots for a while and keeping coming on then saying low or no signal and breaking up then coming back. But them sometimes it’s perfectly fine.
The aerial when first fitted was ok and i cannot remember the exact reason why but we had the guy out again and he positioned the aerial so that it’s kind of pointing inwards to the roof (the aerial is fitted to the side of the house near the gutter) and this was fine for a while so it just got left.
I am wondering if it’s this position that’s causing the issue, after talking to the guy on the phone he said he’s installed loads like that and isn’t usually an issue.
He is due to come out and look at it but had cancelled a couple of times now so waiting on him to look at it.
I was going to ask him about the position of the aerial and if that can be looked at, I live in Liverpool so winter hill comes up as the first preferred transmitter but when i try to manually add channels from winter hill no signal comes up at all from them. So i am manually tuned to the Storeton transmitter and my 5000T does pick these up although from what i remember the signal strength was always around 70+% and 100% quality but when i look now the strength is regularly 50% and quality around 80-100%
So i wondered if the aerial was pointing in the general direction of Storeton but I’m not sure which direction it even is to tell from looking at the aerial and would it pointing inwards to the roof cause any interference?
It seems strange i cannot get any winter hill signal as well, i’m sure i used to be able to get signal from there.
I think the aerial guy said maybe try using a signal amplifier might help but would rather wait for him to look at it.
If there is a bit of vibration of the floor by the box that sometimes causes it to go off briefly and say loss of signal but the issue happens even when the room is perfectly still as well.
Any help would be great
Thanks
James

InactiveI have since found a site called ukfree.tv which shows the exact direction etc.. my aerial is actually pointing towards storeton its just that theres a lot of roof above and in the way of the direction of the aerial.
So not sure if thats the general issue sometimes.

ParticipantAny of the signal postcode checking sites will give you the compass bearings of any of the transmitters in range of your postcode.
Are the aerial elements vertical or horizontal ? Almost always main power ones are horizontally polarised and relays vertically.
You can either use a compass app on a smart phone or use google earth to draw a path from your location to the transmitter.
I will check from central Liverpool.

You would likely do better with the aerial in the loft space provided the direction is through slates and not a brick wall.
It’s a mixed polarisation transmitter. The HD PSB-3 mux is vertical so your elements should be vertical and it’s a powerful 2000KW mux so a loft aerial should be fine.

Can you find a public building shop or pub close to you so I can get a close location on Google Earth ?

No problem. Are the aerial elements vertical or horizontal ? I can see aerials from my house on my Lark Stoke transmitter which should be vertical mounted horizontally.

InactiveHi Graham, my aerial is positioned vertically, from the pics I’ve seen the aerial is pointing more or less to storeton from what i can see.
I have taken a pic and attached of the house at the top part, hopefully so it can't be identified as such where the aerial is, would that because any interference with the roof do you think, mainly next doors at the top?
I have put an arrow to the right, would the aerial really have been better in that position?
Also on the left you can see a big mast in the background, i'm not really sure what this is for but it is kind of in-between the direction of storeton and where my aerial is pointing, do you think this may cause any issues?
I have attached a pic of this mast as well.

Looking at your photo I can’t see the aerial elements. But it looks as if the transmitter is close enough to see.
That close to a 2000KW transmitter chances are the tuner front end is swamped way beyond the linear output of the UHF carrier is way higher than the tuner can cope with.
Fortunately too high a level is easy to cope with.
Try a cheap signal attenuator.
The last thing you need that close is extra amplification.

Ironically if the aerial was horizontal it would have reduced the signal considerably.

InactiveSorry Graham think i may have confused you, that mast isn’t the storeton transmitter thats just a random mast thats close by but i was just asking could it cause an issue with my signal from the storeton transmitter?

Unlikely but is does look very like the Storeton mast. This is a Google Earth ground view of the actual transmitter. Are you sure it's not Storeton ?
