So for some days my HDR1100S has been telling me the memory is empty. I have tried factory resets and switching on and off, it recovers my recordings eventually, but this can’t continue. Speaking to Humax they have told me to reformat the disc, but if I do that I will lose all my recordings. So I want to know how to get my PC to recognise the Humax box and then to send all of the recording to an external HDD and then once the Humax box has been reformatted, how to send all the recordings back again. Has anyone managed to successfully achieve this please.
Thanks Graham, I have seen this posting but don’t understand a word of it. I bought a male male usb cable to connect from the Humax box to my laptop, and another usb cable from the external drive to the laptop. Now what do I do?

You need boot your PC into linux. The Hardisk is formatted Linux EXT3 so to access it from a a PC it needs to be booted into linux. You can boot from a usb stick or a CD drive. Linux is basically command line driven. I will have a look to see if I can find a GUI (graphic user interface) like windows.

You need a powered drop in drive cradle for sata drives with usb connection capability. USB won’t work using a cable like yours.

Thanks Graham. The phrase ” a powered drop in drive cradle for sata drives with usb connection capability” leaves me with a headache. So does this mean that I have to take the box apart? It is starting to look like I will have to forego all our recordings. Unless there is a simple non-techie solution.

Yes you will have to open the box and remove the Hard Drive. You can’t copy the recordings with the hard drive in the box.
That is beyond my competence. Can I hook up the old box to a new box (using the usb cable) and transfer everything across?

Sorry but no. The only way to do it is using the process outlined by Graham.
