I have installed the samba module onto my Foxsat HDR but have encountered the documented problem (https://www.avforums.com/threads/smb-connection-to-foxsat-hdr-from-a-mac.1632428/) with connections from Mac – as this Samba is ‘too old’ – and the problem seems to date back six years!
Is there a better Samba SMB package on the way?

I doubt it as the later versions of SMB require much more space.
