KeymasterDue to the recent issues with MyHumax.org Forums, we are thinking of updating our forum software. This is a brief poll asking for your input.
What forums do you like using? Not the forum subjects but the software/application they use – what facilities do they have that you think might be useful here?

InactiveI don’t like software that tries to be too clever for its own good. Does the simple, things fast and well and doesn’t bother with the bloat.

InactiveI moderate on a forum with a phpBB platform. The old system was vBulletin but on a change of ownership it was found the data was not compatible and was lost. Once I got my head around how phpBB works I must say it does seem a bit more intuitive than the old system. As Gomezz says KISS.
I’ve just had a look at Xenforo – but I cannot see any screen shots or find any comments about it’s functionality.
I also moderate on another forum but that is absolute rubbish – and I’ve no idea what it uses, it could do with updating.

InactiveThanks Graham, that looks very neat. phpBB has several themes (user defined) none of which look as good as the one I just saw for Hummy.TV
That would make it a good choice I reckon. However I’ve already voted.

InactiveThe two features that at top of my must have list are: New (Unread) button to display all topics with new posts; Button to jump to the first unread post in each topic.

InactiveEditing a quoted post using the current setup is a nightmare.

InactiveIt’s high time we got a compatible ‘mobile app’ too. The present system on mobile is a right dogs breakfast.

KeymasterThank you for your input everyone. As suggested with the KISS principle, we have – just improving what we got.
Still todo items on the wishlist of improvements are:
*Better quoting
*List unread topics
Done items are:
*Support for mobile devices
*Better layout/no bloat
Both of these are still being tweaked…
Thanks for your suggestions – keep them coming.

InactiveInclude a Report Button.
Include a Preview Button
Editing a quoted message is still extremely difficult. Simplify it to something like this PLEASE.

InactiveI agree with Trev. Replying/editing a quoted message is really difficult. You really need to be on the ball to avoid editing out the wrong blockquote and cites in the message. Is it any wonder that we end up with a quote within a quote within another quote?
May 10, 2020 at 10:36 am #88510Anonymous
InactiveThe latter is usually caused by:
a. Someone using the quote key instead of the Reply box. (Either accidentally or in ignorance)
b. Someone doing it deliberately to ‘keep the conversation together’ and thus making the whole thread extremely difficult to follow when one follows another, just getting longer and longer, when all you should really needed to do is to read consecutive posts without all the quotes within quotes.

InactiveAll very true. But when you’re used to the rambling posts in another place you get into the habit of wanting to quote the point you’re referring to.

InactiveAh Ha. Absolutely.
I was not really referring to quoting to pick the bones out of a previous post in Post #12. I was referring to those who blindly quote the previous post which itself contains a quote of the immediately previous post. Post #4 here is an example (not containing multiple quotes within quotes though). Madness.
What I was actually banging on about in Posts #7 & 10, was the difficulty of editing a post to pick out the salient points that you NEED to quote for clarity rather than quoting the whole message. Especially if you want to ‘split’ the quote into several sectiond. It’s a nightmare here.
