InactiveI thought this may be the appropriate place to create this topic….
I was always a ‘Freeview’ person rather than Freesat (I don’t subscribe to any TV services) and having moved to a new area 3+ years ago satellite TV was the only option so invested in a second hand HDR1000/1010s.
I hear so many people rave about the ‘old foxsat’….
can anyone shed any light on the main differences as I’d never heard of foxsat previous
Thanks.

ParticipantFoxsat-HDR Twin Tuner same as the HDR-1000S. Similar two channel recording and third channel viewing. The 1000S though adds time shifting capability to the the third watched channels under any recording circumstances. On a Foxsat you can only time shift the 3rd channel when the two recordings are from the same transponder. You can’t record the time shift buffer on a Foxsat, you can on a 1000S. Virtually no on demand recording (ITV player still works) or external media playback using a Foxsat (without using the free custom firmware), the 1000S has extensive catch up and can play back external content both by streaming from other kit and from usb.
Both are capable of using both tuners on a single cable, the Foxsat though requires a external patch cable (tuner 1 out to tuner 2 in). The 1000S has an automatic internal link enabled on setup with a single cable.
Foxsat-HDR is much more versatile when used in non-freesat mode than the 1000S, there is no recording capability for non-freesat mode on a 1000S. The Foxsat allows manual recording (and manual timers with the Custom Firmware).
Picture quality on a 1000S is noticeably superior to a Foxsat (With the CF you can stream Foxsat recordings to the 1000S improving the picture quality in the process).
Foxsat-HDR allows archiving of recordings to USB (and playback from usb). No recording export at all on a 1000S.
The Foxsat-HDR’s real ace in the hole is the custom firmware add on which adds many features, too many to talk about here. If you want more info the software is hosted on the AV Forums site.

InactiveBrilliant answer thanks.
Couple of points though, my box wont allow to record a channel and watch another with only 1 cable, and most certainly wont allow us to record two and watch a third? unless by third you mean a previously recorded program?
On another note, with the ‘Non-Freesat’ channels, how exactly does this work? I tried to play with it when I first had the box but quickly gave up.

Something wrong with your setup if you can’t record two and watch a third (this is subject to some restrictions).
Try this assuming you have a English Postcode and aren’t using a single tuner HB model.
Tap in 106 to goto BBC1 HD and press the record button, tap in 102 to goto BBC2 HD and press the record button a second time. Select any available third channel while viewing by using the programme up/down button, or by entering a channel number from the following list (other than ITV regions you don’t have) press pause to prove you have live pause etc. View for 10 or 15 mins.

Bring up the recordings list and stop one of the two BBC recordings. Exit to 3rd viewed channel and press instant record. Now look at the recordings list, you should find a ongoing recording of the 3rd channel from the time you switched to view it.
Can you post if this works or not. If it doesn’t you may need to do a factory reset.
I wouldn’t bother with non-freesat there’s very little worth watching on 28.2E that isn’t already available in Freesat mode.
http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=28.2E&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear
If you find any in the above list make a note of the transponder details and ask how to add it to non-freesat mode.

InactiveWelsh postcode if that makes a difference.
I’ll give that a go when I get a chance, however the box has had quite a few factory resets over the last year in an effort to fix what was a failing HDD, and to my knowledge its not worked.

InactiveJust had a quick check and get a message saying “Cannot change channel while recording”
however if I select up or down channel it seems to work but only on some channels.
So I assume not all channels work as a third channel?

It depends entirely on the two channels you elect to record. Of course having a single cable is more restricted than having two.
Unlike terrestrial the tuner sends control signals to the lnb. When you use only a single cable only tuner 1 has control of the lnb.
There is two frequency bands (Low/High) and two polarisations Horizontal and Vertical. This means the lnb can be switched into one of four modes.
Low Band Horizontal (LBH)
Low Band Vertical (LBV)
High Band Horizontal (HBH)
High Band Vertical (HBV)
In single cable mode Tuner 2 can only use channels that are on transponders matching the mode tuner 1 has switched the lnb to.
If both recordings are from the same transponder then both recordings are handled by tuner 1 leaving tuner 2 free to show any channel matching the mode.
If from different transponders then you can watch any 3rd channel sharing a transponder with either recording.
More info and the data you need to follow the above here.

Yes your postcode does make a difference your BBC 1 HD Wales (106) is on a different transponder to BBC2 – HD (102). Record BBC 1 HD on 972 instead of 106.
