    I plugged my USB hard drive into the Humax while turned on (blue light) and the machine crashed and re-booted. is this normal when plugging in a hard drive or should I do it when on standby ?

    It’s not normal, usb is designed to be hot swappable. All that should happen is a message on screen saying something like usb device connected.
