Hi there. My mother recently bought an HDR-1000S, after her Foxsat HDR broke down, and I’m trying to set it up to be as friendly as possible. But I’ve run into a problem, and would appreciate any help.
My mother lives in a block of flats with a communal satellite dish, and only has one input (one LNB) available. Since she can’t see much difference between SD and HD (and neither can I), I’ve advised her to stick as far as possible to channels in the “first group”, as I call it. That’s the band/polarisation combination that includes BBC1 SD, BBC2 SD, ITV1 SD, etc, and omits most of the HD channels. That includes almost all the channels she usually watches, and as long she sticks to that group she can record/watch any combination of those channels.
Unfortunately she has some difficulty remembering to do this, especially with BBC2, where the HD channel is confusingly in the 102 slot, among the main SD channels, and BBC2 SD is out of sequence at 109. With the Foxsat I was able to delete BBC2 HD and other unwanted HD channels, so she wouldn’t select those by accident. Deleting the unwanted HD channels also meant she wasn’t being unnecessarily asked whether she’d rather record in HD every time she scheduled an SD recording.
I’d like to do the same thing again with the HDR-1000S, but I’ve run into a problem. After deleting BBC1 HD, for example, I’ve found she can no longer schedule a recording on BBC1 SD. And ditto with the other channels. Has anyone else found this, and can you think of a solution? (I see that people around here usually want to delete the SD channels, not the HD, so perhaps no one has tried this before.)
By the way, is there a more detailed manual available, as the one supplied with the device doesn’t seem to cover everything?

Thanks for replying, Graham. I’ve already retuned and restored all the channels, so as not to interfere with my mother’s recording. But I’ll have another go at deleting BBC1 HD as soon as I get a chance, and then report back.
Possibly a s/w problem where the code that checks whether a HD alternative is available cannot cope with that channel being deleted?

I can set a recording on BBC1 Wales, Scotland and NI, presumably because those have corresponding HD channels of their own. But I can’t set a recording on the regional English BBC1 channels.
I seem to remember reading that there’s some way to move a regional BBC1 channel to the 101 slot. But even if that worked, I think I’d still be faced with similar problems with other HD channels. That said, BBC2 HD is the one that causes most problems, because it’s located at 102 in the middle of the SD channels. If I could just find a solution for that one it would be be great help.

Probably. I doubt this situation arose during testing.

Thanks. But unfortunately that won’t help me with any channels other than BBC1. For BBC2 the regional channels (Scotland, Wales, NI) don’t have HD equivalents, so I assume that deleting BBC2 HD will make it impossible to schedule recordings on those channels.
Try turning off the HD prompt
Settings – General Settings – On Screen display – HD Prompt – off
I’d already switched that off. But it only stops the HD prompts that appear when you switch live channels. It doesn’t stop the Humax from asking you if you want to record in HD when you schedule a recording.
I think I’ll just have to give up on the idea of deleting the HD channels. It seems like this is just one of those respects in which the HDR-1000 is inferior to its Foxsat predecessor.
BTW, when I wrote my OP I assumed that it was possible to record two channels in the same group (e.g. LBH) and then watch any third channel in that group. But since then I’ve realised that, if the two recorded channels are on different transponders, the third channel is limited to those two transponders. Re-reading your page on the subject (http://myhumax.org/forum/topic/what-can-i-record-and-watch-using-1-or-2-cables) I realise you mentioned that, but I didn’t get it. I think in practice my mother will hardly ever be able to watch the third channel she wants. She’ll have to watch it on the TV (Freeview) instead.

That’s correct, but it is sometimes possible to change your third channel options by using the regional variants which for the BBC SD channels have horizontal and vertical variants. The freetime boxes have an additional capability over the earlier Foxsat-HDR. If you can watch a 3rd channel you can also time shift it. When one of the two recordings finishes you can then record the 3rd channel (from the beginning if you watched from the beginning) from the time shift buffer file (Hint you can force a 3rd channel to be viewed from the beginning by setting a watch reservation). Not that I expect mum to get any of this
, but the fact that the programme up/down buttons will cycle through viewable channels might be be of use. The automated Excel spreadsheet identifies these by simply clicking on the screen. You do need genuine Excel on a PC to use it though. (The MAC version won’t run the macros).
You can also tell her if she starts watching a programme and wants to record the red R button the remote will record it.
