I have an old Sony HD plasma screen tv from 2007 and only lately managed to get HD working via the HDMI cable with the Humax 2000T. Comparing the BBC HD film quality of say Monsters Inc with the DVD we have on our Sony surround player, the HD tv signal looks far better quality and definition than the DVD. Obviously it is better to record movies on BBC HD rather than buy DVD’s. I must admit I always thought they would be of equal quality as DVD plays at 1080. The BBC HD seems brighter too. I have been looking at getting an LED HD tv but the broadcasts on those look pixely and inferior to our old plasma which we will be sticking with.

Very impressive for HD this machine I must say.

UK DVD’s are 720 x 576 (same as best SD TV channels). Bluray is required for 1920 x 1080 and as the bitrate is much higher than broadcast the picture quality is better than broadcast HD. It is possible to put HD on a DVD blank using AVCHD format, these can only be played back using a bluray player.
