I’ve done some googling but a lot of the drives mentioned are either bigger than I need or no longer available or both.

I’m not really looking to increase capacity, or not by a lot, 500GB would probably be ideal. I delete 95% of recordings after one viewing and copy off anything I want to keep permanently.

Reason I’m looking at replacement is bad blocks found on existing drive (after a bit of a struggle with fix-disk and e2fsck).

Any other relevant comments, besides hdd recommendations, also welcome.

Any of these AV drives from WD (SATA 3 for preference, these you wont need to jumper two pins).

Also used by Humax the Seagate range.

    Thanks, just ordered the WD5000AVDS.

I’m planning to remove the old drive, connect both to a PC and clone old to new using clonezilla (on a boot CD), then a partition editor to enlarge the video partition and use the full drive capacity. Any reason that won’t work, or other comments?

PS Also, is it good idea to do anything else, such as replacing the fan, while I’ve got it open? It’s getting on, I got it within the first week or two after it first appeared.

I don’t know clonezilla but don’t see why it would not work.

Think I would let the Foxsat format the new drive and then just copy the files on the Video partition across. Thinking about possible new bad blocks on your source disk.

While it’s open remove any dust from fan etc.
