InactiveI am thinking of getting a HB1000s and attaching a 500GB HDD.
Before I do, can any HB1000s owners/users supply the following info.
When the box goes into standby after a recording does the HDD spin down and shut off.
The reason I ask is I currently have the HDD attached to a FTA box and when in standby the HDD keeps on spinning, something I dislike.

If you use a USB powered caddy when the HB-1000S goes into stabdby (takes about 5 mins) the USB port is unpowered and the HB-1000S uses < 0.5w.
I have a Icy Box IB-AC603a-U3 (2.5″ adaptor) and a WD AV-25 WD10JUCT. All depends on the caddy / adaptor.
Like the HB-1000S very much.

InactiveThanks for that.
I should have said that the HDD is USB powered.
Sounds ideal.

The drive will need reformatting to NTFS (The HB-1000S can do it for you).
I think the 5 mins to go into full standby (< 0.5w) is down to it has to also to deal with those without a disk and I think it saves channels and setting to (relatively) slow flash memory.
For me the HB-1000S is an idea second unit.

InactiveDear KennyB,
Welcome! Yes, like Repassac, I can only recommend the HB as a little wonderbox. It is, I have found out, capable of re-formatting HDD’s that were unfound by Windows 7 & XP, restoring them to full usage (NTFS).
I too use a 1TB self-powered HDD (Intenso) which never hesitates. I guess the same applies as described for Repassac’s HDD, ie that when the HB is put into standby or off, the HDD must do the same.
Regards. IAINB

InactiveThank you both for your comments.
Ordered the box online this morning, delivery promised for tomorrow.

InactiveNow that I’ve had the HB-1000S a few days might as well say how it went.
Install/setup was uneventful, everything worked first time, apart from 2 test recordings which both failed. Not sure if this was because I had formatted the HDD to NTFS on the laptop. After using the Humax to do the format, no failed recordings since.
Missed the first episode of the new series of Rev on BBC2 which gave me the excuse to use the rollback EPG which went without a hitch.
The clicky remote doesn’t bother me too much, but it could do if you were a bit of a channel hopper. I was a bit surprised that the remote can work the TV, I was under the impression the Freetime remote didn’t.
Do I like the box. Yes it’s a marvelous piece of kit.
If it keeps working as it is now I shall be happy.
Regarding the time the disk takes to shut down after a recording, I timed it at about 13 minutes.

………….

I see faster full standby times on my unit – about 5 minutes – This possibly depends on what needs to be saved to flash memory, for example, channel updates as well as other settings.

Does that mean that the 1000S remote also can control other units as well as the TV (audio system, DVD etc) as with my Foxsat?

InactiveHi everyone…
I am new to the forum, and Just like KennyB above, haven’t actually purchased my Freesat box yet. I gave Sky their 31 days notice last week, and can’t quite decide on what Humax Freesat box to get. Originally, I had my heart set on the HDR-1000S, but reading the above posts, it would appear that another option is to get the HB-1000S, and then buy a separate USB HDD. This works out quite a bit cheaper doing it that way, is this the reason for buying the HB-1000S, rather than the HDR-1000S? Or, are there other reasons?
I’m really looking forward to getting my new Freesat box, but which one?
Thanks

ParticipantThe HDR1000S has two tuners, the HB1000S has only 1 tuner. Twin tuners will give a lot more flexibility for multiple recording and viewing other channels while recording.
Welcome to the forum.

InactiveHi,
I bought the hb1000s as I only have one LNB/cable than runs from the satellite to front room. And pretty much non-existant freeview.
Did I read ‘somewhere’ that some models can run two tuners off of one cable/LNB? If true which models? I may have considered another device if that is so.
Not having twin tuners isn’t the end of the world. +1 channels help. You can also watch recordings while recording (given you’ve connected a drive over USB). That makes it more flexible than you might first think. You can’t record one sat channel while watching another live sat channel.

ParticipantThe HDR10X0s models can use both tuners with only a single cable, and are surprisingly capable in what you can record (and watch a 3rd channel while recording two).
http://myhumax.org/forum/topic/what-can-i-record-and-watch-using-1-or-2-cables
Pretty much the same as a Foxsat-HDR though a bit more flexible as you can also record a 3rd watched programme from the time shift buffer after one recording has completed.
I don’t have a HB1000S but would be surprised if you can’t watch other channels while recording provided they share a transponder with the recording channel.
eg Watch BBC2-HD while recording BBC1-HD (And vice-versa). Next time you are recording try the channel up/down buttons (On other Humax boxes this cycles through all available channels).

I stand corrected. I had no idea that you could do that. Tested on my HB1000S, while recording one channel, I could cycle through others with the channel up/down buttons, and view some other satellite broadcasts. Note the available channels are limited. But it could be really useful. I guess I will soon learn to associate channels with their corresponding transponders!
Thanks Graham.
