I have just has a message when I switched on saying “the HDD storage must be formatted to use recording functions. Press OK to go to data storage menu”

The only thing I could do was reformat so I have now lost everything I recorded. My question is – is this now likely to happen again – ie is the HDD bust? We have the the machine for just under 1 year so still under guarantee so do I take it back?

This has just happened to me, too. Do I really need to format and lose all my Chritmas TV? Gutted.

    Welcome to the Forum :-)

    Clutching at straws…..

You could try removing mains power for a while.

Can you access the storage menu and carry out a HDD check?

The alternative to formatting is to install the custom firmware and use fix-disk. The problem most likely is a marginal disk sector but depending where on the disk it is, the process of fixing it may be straightforward or may be quite complicated but if you are prepared to stick at it the chances of recovering all recordings are good.

    Hi Voidstate

Did you try the suggestions? It was too late for me as I had already reformatted and lost everything. I am interested if this would have worked.

Seems to be recording OK again now. Is this just one of those things we have to put up with occasionally?

This has just happened to me. It started when I clicked on a recording to play but it clicked straight back into the menu again.

I noticed the machine has been quite noisy lately.

I’m non techie and don’t understand what I can do to save all my precious recordings.

    Can somebody please help

I have tried switching on and off and still get the same message.

When I click OK I see

    Storage

    HDD test

    Format Storage

    Available size 0.0GB

    Used size 0.0GB

    Reserved size 0.0GBGB

    Total size O.OGB

I pressed HDD test and test results are

    HDD Test Fail

You may recover the HDD through Format Storage (Erro code: 8)

    What does this mean please?

I think that should have been Error Code 8

Assuming you do have an HDR-FOX T2 then the easiest way of retaining the recordings would be to pop over to hummy.tv and install the custom firmware and run fix-disk. See https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Install_Modified_Firmware and https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Maintenance_Mode_Disk_Check

I have an HDR2000T – will that work as you explain above?

You have posted in the HDR-FOX T2 section of the forum; please be careful to post in the correct section of the forum in future. The custom firmware isn’t available for the HDR-FOX T2 so I am afraid that is a non-starter now that we know you have an HDR-2000T. As far as I know the only way to fix the problem on an HDR-2000T will be to take the hard drive out and connect it to a computer running Linux. Maybe someone else has a simpler solution.
