Having had my HDR 1000s about two weeks, last night for the first time, I became aware of the HDD noise when recording. The TV sound tends to mask the noise but it is very noticeable during quiet times – sitting about 4mtrs away.

Anyone else notice this or do I have a rogue unit?

No problem with mine. You say “when recording”? it is always recording when it is on, to capture the live buffer.

I find my 1000S much quieter than my Samsung Sky+ HD box.

Mine’s whisper quiet, you have to put your ear to it to tell it’s on. The OP may have a duff HDD, I would be inclined to get it replaced.

    Thanks for the replies.

When I say recording, accepting the ‘live buffering’ is on all the time, the HDD noise seems louder with a cyclic rhythm when recording another channel to the one being watched.

Mine’s about 4ft from my left ear, even with the TV off in a quiet room I can’t hear it recording. It’s generally recording two HD channels at the same time. I can hear my Foxsat in the same room when the TV is off from about 4M away.
