I seem to have my new Foxsat HDR working and connected to my network for iPlayer which is working fine. I’ve heard about some highly recommended custom firmware: is this Raydon’s Media and File Server Bundle? I’ve read all I can find about it and it seems very techy.

Is there an idiot’s guide to

    – the features and benefits

    – where to get it from

    – how to install it

    – how to use it

    – how to uninstall it

Alan, yes it is that bundle – it is stable and well-tested now and enables you to copy and stream video across your home network, plus use the web interface to read the epg, set and delete recordings. There are also some functions which enable things which the Humax cannot do out of the box, like schedule recordings for non-freesat channels. And a number of additional plug-ins for various other purposes like automatic housekeeping recordings, and accessing the HDR from the internet.

Anyway, where to get it and how to install it is described here:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/freesat/1661195-media-file-server-bundle-foxsat-hdr-release-4-0-part-3-a.html

Once you have installed it there is lots of documentation in the web-interface incl. a bunch of FAQs culled from several forums (we have just done a big overhaul of the documentation to make it easier to access).

Any difficulties then just post back here or in avforums and help will be forthcoming :-)

P.S: just to let you know how the installation goes as a brief run-through so you’re aware of the basic steps:

    1. You download a file from the link above.

    2. You copy the file to a USB stick, and start the HDR with the USB stick inserted to get the custom firmware on the HDR

    3. This gives a basic web-interface which you can access from a computer on your home network.

    4. Finalising the installation and installing any additional plug-ins is all done via that web-interface (automatic download and installation almost as seamless as an iPhone ;-) )

I (think) have installed 4.0.8 on the Freesat Foxsat HDR. However I can’t see where to turn FTP on. Am I being stupid?

Perhaps you did not read the readme or the first post in the link above?

http to the Foxsat’s IP address with your browser, install the full web interface and then go to package management.

Perhaps I should learn not to do these things at 1 in the morning!

    Thanks for your help. BUT.

I connected via the Humax IP via IE. Clicked on the install and got the following error.

Now even after a restart of the PC and Humax and checkin the IP I cannot connect via IE.

Anyother suggestions for this user who can break all IT?

it would appear that the Foxsat cannot determine the IP address – normally this is a result of an incorrect DNS address. Is the Foxsats network settings static or obtained via DHCP from a host connected to the internet?

Thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately I can’t get past step 2. When I insert the stick and bring the box out of standby with the button pressed nothing happens except that BBC1 flashes up and then the box goes back into standby.

I note the suggestion to use a low-capacity USB stick (and Humax’s recommendation to use one under 1Gb in size – heaven knows what century they’re in). Perhaps that’s the problem though why the size should matter I don’t know. The only USB stick I have is 32Gb. I think my son has an ancient 1Gb stick: I’ll ask him when he comes in and try again with that.

PS: is there no preview post option on this forum?

Good point! So set IP to manual 172.16.19.114, Gateway to router (Draytek) & DNS to SBS server. (All details as per PC I am using now except unique IP address for Humax).

    Still no download!

Strange how using the links in the above post I can download the files using IE on the same laptop.

O and BBC Iplayer etc works fine so the Humax has internet access.

I have tried this with the DNS as the SBS or the router. No difference.

The IE connection works sometimes but not all the time even on the file listing. Could it be further network issues?

I changed nothing. I used IE and the IP address/media/video. Saw the listing. then just the IP. It connected. And did the install! So why did it work now?

    !! CONGRATULATIONS !!

You have successfully installed the full web interface and supporting packages.

Please restart your Foxsat HDR in order to complete the initialisation process.

There have been several reported significant internet routers down over the last few days.

Oh well. So I have FTP access and web interface. So now to the good stuff. Geet the HD files off and onto the network storage to give others some recording space on the Humax.

So I copied over the HMT file. Ran Foxy. Dropped over the HMT file and . . . . .ERROR – ” Not a valid T2 HMT File! “

Is the Foxy utility not suitable for files recorded pre 4.0.8?

Does it not work on Freesat HDR?

I have tried 4 HMT files. All the same error.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Could I e-mail one of the HMT files for someone else to try?

No it doesn’t – the encryption of HD files works differently on the HDR. There are two modes of operation of the HDR (more detail in the manual) – freesat mode and non-freesat mode. In freesat mode you get the benefit of the EPG, series recording etc., but HD recordings are encrypted and can only be played back on the same machine. In non-freesat mode you can record HD and it is not encrypted, but you can’t schedule recordings etc. Any HD recordings you have previously made in freesat mode will be encrypted and only playable on your HDR I’m afraid.

It’s independent of the version of the HDR custom firmware and a limitation of the box itself.

You can copy off SD files no problem and play them on your home network or anywhere else (they are non-encrypted transport stream files)
