    Reg Hardware score – 75%

Taking the box in its own right, it’s more user friendly than most ‘connected TV’ screens and set-top gadgets. When it comes to the catch-up services that people use regularly, then it’s got those sorted, with plenty of potential to improve.

So by pitching YouView at pay-TV refuseniks, it has the concept right. The launch price equals about 14 months of basic Sky payments; however, it’s currently too expensive to go flying off the shelves.

I have been waiting for this gizmo. Comet had one on show but not set up for demonstration. No “WiFi” sticker on it I ask. “It don’t got it” dealer chappy says. “You pulling my plonker” I say. “£300 Freeview HD recorder with no WiFi, you ‘aving me on”. “Does the Dongle from the last series work in it”. “No sir, you need these mains wiring network RJ45 plugs”. My 9300 has an extended lease on life me thinks.

Any wireless ethernet bridge should work.

I wonder if anyone has thought of building in a homeplug to a STB?

Wouldn’t that mean there may be incompatibility issues ?

They are supposed to be interoperable I think (subject to being the same speed), The standards are controlled by The HomePlug Alliance

There’s no way it should have got 75% based on what’s written in that review!

No, I don’t think these reviews are looking too far beyond the flashy UI.

It also depends on what they are using as their 100%. Is it the HDR T2? So the YouView box is 75% as good as the HDR? lol :P

The youview version is just in a similar looking box as the HDR T2, not much else is similar, but I am sure you are aware of that.

But this is a YouView box. It might be made by Humax, but you can get the HDR-FOX T2 for £80 less, and it’s essentially the same in terms of functionality.

Really – possibly the most misleading observation yet as is the one about surround sound (did they actually test anything ?)

Ive got a DTR-1000 & apart from the UI my HDR beats it hands down.

Not all home plugs are compatible with that standard. Netgear ones are not for example. Then there are the multiple speed grades, which does the STB support?

Clearly a choice of speed would have to be made. I would not see that as a problem – Humax already sell them from Humax Direct as extra’s.
