    Hi all

Just updated to version 4 of the software, added the network location in Mint 11 and I can browse and see all my media files. However, previously I could open the .ts files using vlc and watch them over the network on my PC – when I try opening .ts files now though, I either get nothing or a couple of seconds before the file stops and I get an error message – is there something I cam doing wrong? These are SD files by the way, not HD.

    Thanks

    Kyle

NB) I can copy the files off to my PC and then they work, just not in the native folder (which I am sure I used to do?)

What error message do you get ?

    File reading failed:

VLC could not read the file.

    There’s a post at

    http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&p=234335

which is about VLC not opening video files if double clicking but working ok if the file is dragged to an already open VLC. The problem appears to be related to the file source location, which sounds similar to your situation. Suggested solution is a file association correction.

    Might be worth checking.

    Hi

I checked that – I don’t think that’s the issue. If I open a file through the file manager off the Humax, it won’t play. If I copy the file from the Humax to my desktop (say), it will play perfectly through VLC – so it seems like a an issue in the connection? I have connected over the network using FTP log in – could this be a problem?

It seems to be related to the file location, so it could be a connection issue.

Did you try the debugging option on VLC when opening the file ?

    You should see something like

    ‘filesystem debug: opening file’

    and then something like

‘filesystem error: cannot open file’ followed with a reason for being unable to open the file.

Look for lines containing ‘error’ in a red font. They might tell us more about why VLC isn’t opening the file.

    Hi

I have switched on the debugging and still get this?

I have just put on XBMC to see if I could map the humax that way but still no joy, think there is something basic I am missing :(

Edit – I seem to remember doing something with Samba when I had it running under version 3 – but as said, under FTP I can get things off the box and play them that way…

    That’s the error window.

To see the VLC debugging you need to press ‘ctrl-m’, to open another window called ‘messages’. Change verbosity to ‘2’ then try opening the file.

Look for red font error messages in there.

I think you will need to be running samba on the Humax to allow the windows machine with VLC to play the files.

I have installed Samba but to be honest I am not sure what I am doing – sorry Dino.

    Kyle

Edit – I don’t use Windows, I am on Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu.

I have now googled to find out how to make my PC a client so I can access the Humax (which is definitely running Samba) – is there an easy guide anywhere?

Solved – no idea how! But it’s working, thank you Dino.

I probably didn’t help much – glad it is working.

Another good place for support questions on the Media and File Server mod firmware is at AV Forums.
