Hello again. I have copied out my wife’s “HUGE” collection of “Strictly Come Dancing” that is consuming my 9200T. I have them on a 1TB Seagate Backup+ external drive. I have successfully played iplayer files back, in full screen, through the TV on this drive which connects directly to the USB input on my Samsung TV. However, when I play an un-doctored .TS file on this drive from the 9200T, I get more of a square picture with long faces. I have tried the display tools on the Samsung but they can’t change what I see. Can I do anything with these files to get them in a better format so I can start grabbing back some of the Humax disk space for my own purposes, Thanks.

Problem is most likely down to the TV, or more specifically the settings you have on the TV, regarding the aspect ratio. The picture you get on the screen, depends on two independent settings.

1 The aspect ratio of the overall picture (Usually 16:9)

2 The shape of the pixels assumed by the display (technically the PAR – Pixel Aspect Ratio), usually square but can be rectangular in both horizontal and vertical orientation.

Both the above information is contained within the file you are trying to display.

Not being familiar with the TV, you should check the display options in the TV menus.

Start by looking for a 16:9 picture aspect ratio and a auto option.

Had a look at the TV in more detail. When using TV native I have full control on aspect ratio. (Flat screen TV is about 3 years old so pretty up to date). However, when I access the external HDD with the .TS files, I only have 2 choices for picture size, FIT (which looks like 4:3) and ORIGINAL (which shrinks it to an even smaller square size). I have been googling and it appears there are a lot of people over the years having problems filling the TV screen, and all the suggestions are tortuous and I haven’t found one thread that seems to work. It just seems weird to me (as a non-video specialist) that the Humax can play the files back through the TV happily but an external copy of same file presents a problem. Anyone got anything to suggest – or do I have to buy the wife her own PVR?

Can you upload a short clip of an affected ts to a file share site so I can have a look at what you actually have ?

Hi Graham, I loaded a file on dropbox and replied via email. Just checking if you got the details?

It’s a pillarbox 4:3 format. Should play in a 16:9 window with black borders each side.

This works fine on my PC using Splash Media Player and VLC.

Thanks for looking at it. I agree with what you say.

BUT this was recorded on my Humax and plays back on the TV in 16:9 full screen when using the Humax replay. So, why can’t I play it back in the same manner when I export it to an external drive.

What screen format settings do have on the TV ? It’s clearly stretching the image incorrectly.

Hi Graham, in previous post I mentioned that I had a more detailed look at the TV. When using TV native I have full control on aspect ratio. However, when I access the external HDD with the .TS files, I only have 2 choices for picture size, FIT (which looks like 4:3) and ORIGINAL (which shrinks it to an even smaller square size). Maybe the Samsung can’t handle it?

You say that the Kojak file is a pillarbox 4:3 format. So, how come this is the case when it was recorded on the 9200T and exported using the HUMAXRW utility. Are there any settings I have missed that would export it in 16:9 format?

Presumably because the original broadcast was 4:3.

    This may help

Basically you need some sort of video editor with a black 16:9 layer with the 4:3 video on top of it.
