I can FTP into the 5000T and see folders including ‘Video’ however it won’t let me upload a .mp4 file to that folder.

If I have a video I want to play from the 5000T, what format does it have to be in to upload it?

… or am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Thanks

Mp4 is a container not a video format.

The MP4 container can contain compressed video and audio. The box needs to to be able to decode at least whatever whatever the codec used to compress the video was used, mpeg4, H264/AVC mpeg 2 and the same for the audio compression contained within the container,

To help further you need to download the free app.

Mediainfo, open the file select view and tree. Export the details to a text file and paste it as a reply. If you cannot open it you cannot use it externally.

Once we know what you are expecting the box to cope with we have a chance to locate the issue.

How to Choose The Best Video File Formats: MP4, MOV, MKV

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats.

The box will cope with the video compression and audio formats built in to cope with the formats and containers used to broadcast.

No idea where your content came from, so no way to tell if it could be played.

Data above. I see I’ve got a lot to learn – the video plays fine on any PC so I just assumed it would on the Humax!!

You can’t upload anything to the Video folder. It is accessible so that you take copy of recordings for backup purposes (although they aren’t very useful as they are encrypted). You can copy material to the “Download” folder on the FVP and you should be able to play it from there providing it is in a compatible format.

The Video looks fine. Not sure about the audio. The box does support AAC audio (used on Freeview-HD).

As Martin says try uploading it to BOX user download area.

The best way to do what you want is

Get a Amazon 4K Fire stick and install plex on it.

Install Plex on your PC and add all your files.

The major advantage with this arrangement is the plex app plays back at the exact framerate the content was recorded at. This avoids the jerkiness caused by pulldown.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K will support Video Frame Rate Matching

There is a number of ways of converting unsuitable files.

There are quite a few free video and audio conversion apps. Lots of tutorials on the net.

TmuxerGUI – doesn’t support aac so you need to replace AAC with ac3 (Dolby Digital)

    VLC Player

    Handbrake.

Thanks. Martin’s suggestion fixed the problem for now – ftp’ed it into the download folder and I can play it from there.

I have Plex on my back-up Synology box and I could play other videos from there but not this one. At the moment, I’ve no idea why although I’ve had odd problems with Plex on that before. Perhaps related to it being such a tiny processor. Maybe I’ll try putting Plex on a proper PC – I’ve got an old spare HP Microserver with Linux doing nothing much.

    Thanks again for the help.

A follow up question: When I ftp in, I see 5 folders. I now know what ‘Downloads’ is and I know what ‘Recordings’ is.

It seems obvious what Video, Music and Photo are for, but how does anything get into them?

Upload content from a usb Stick plugged into the box.

So obvious I hadn’t thought of it!

But why allow you to copy from usb into them but not from ftp? Not sure I understand the logic!

Tried turning the Samba server on but no sign of it appears on my network…

Unusually if I remember correctly the box supports NTFS so files larger than 4GB are OK.

I have never understood exactly what is going on with the “Samba” server. On my computer running Windows 10 this is what I see:

It is the DMS server that will give you access to SD recordings and decrypt them. Note certain details redacted. I assume the decryption process involves the DLNA server.

Mine only appears in ‘Other devices’ not in ‘Media devices’. No idea why!

What exactly do you see in other devices?
