Thanks for your patience I had already done what you suggest, but I have done it all again. I also reinstalled the firmware. Nothing has changed.
OK; what happens if you try to ping the Humax IP Address from the PC?

So the Humax is acquiring an IP address by DHCP but you can’t ping it from another computer on the same network; is that correct? If so something is wrong. What are the IP addresses of the PC, the router and the Humax?

That looks very odd to me with three different subnets. What make and model is the router?

That looks very odd to me with three different subnets. What make and model is the router? I think 192.0.2.100 is a default IP address used by the Humax when DHCP is not working. What IP address does the router think it has allocated to the Humax?
I have a suspiscion that the user has connected his laptop direct to the HDR Fox T2 with an ethernet cable, without any connection to the router. This won’t work, the HDR Fox T2 needs a wired ethernet connection to the broadband router.
I have looked into the router. It shows only one of the three ethernet ports is connected – to the laptop on the ethernet part of my network. I think the ethernet i/o device in the Humax has failed.
The router is part of the FTTC broadband kit supplied by Plusnet. It is called Technicolor TG582n .
Both the laptop and the Humax are connected to ethernet ports on the router, not directly to one another.
At this point I have to give up for today, I will be back tomorrow morning. Many thanks for your attention.

Definitely a networking problem:192.0.2.100 is the default IP address the HDR-FOX gets set to when it is configured to use DHCP but it cannot acquire an address from the router.
Bill3579: it is fine for your laptop to be connected wirelessly, connect the HDR-FOX to the router with an Ethernet cable. As the router’s IP address is 192.168.1.254, both the HDR-FOX and the laptop need to have 192.168.1.x IP addresses for the connection to work.

Clearly that is possible but in my experience it is far more likely to be a cable fault or a connector not seated properly. If necessary move the Humax close to the router and use a short cable and see if that helps.
Dead ethernet ports are unusual, I agree that a dodgy cable is far more likely. Try a different one.
There is also clearly a problem with the ethernet to the laptop, since it doesn’t get an IP address within the valid network for the router either. Something funny going on, are the ethernet ports on the router disabled or something?
I rebuilt the ethernet set up yesterday evening with all short cables. No change. I then had a word with my ISP tech support. The router software shows only my laptop connected to port 2 of 3 no matter which port it is connected to. They will send a replacement, improved, router because the present one might be the cause of my connection problems.
I will let you know the outcome after I have installed the new router.

At first, all seemed well. The HDR IP was 192.168.1.2. I uaed Putty to reach the first Putty window and selected Maintenance Mode, Option 1. This was shown on the HDR display. However, logging on via Putty the second time did not work, no ethernet connection.. I closed down and restarted, intending to select the cli option, but the initial logon also fails..

Oh dear. What happens if you ping 192.168.1.2 ? Perhaps try power cycling the Humax.
No point pinging now. I did try power cycling before I posted. I will leave it with no power and try again tomorrow. If I can get as far as the first maintenance menu, I will go straight to cli and follow the advice in MontysEvilTwin’s long response and see what happens. I fear a minor component is failing or a dryish joint has come unstuck, The HDR has definitely had no physical or thermal shocks.
