What are people’s opinions on the Aura vs FVP-5000T?

Much faster User Input than FVP-5000T

    2.5″ Drive reduces power consumption

Simultaneous recording capability subject to Mux same on both boxes.

If you have or getting a 4K Tv essential update to bet the best from it

Iplayer in 4K HLG HDR is stunning

Lots of Youtube 4K free content.

Possible Con No Netflix but does have Amazon Prime. If you have another source for Netflix – not an issue.

Remote viewing and scheduling using the Aura Mobile app for IOS and Android.

You can add your own apps from the playstore – eg supports Plex and Kodi. Disney+ etc.

Voice Control can be handy. Similar capability to Amazon Echo. Simple example Will it rain today.

Content can be downloaded in SD quality for offline viewing on Mobile devices like tablets and phones.

Nice to see the sensible use of the coloured keys for shortcut functions like in the epg,

Yellow To jump to any day, Red to apply filters like HD TV Favourites to the eog, Green to sort by channel number/name Blue filter by genre.

Anyone else think of any pros/cons. ?

Thanks Graham. When you say”Content can be downloaded in SD quality for offline viewing on Mobile devices like tablets and phones.” does this mean if you’ve recorded something in HD you can still watch it on a mobile albeit in SD quality?

Yes it does, Read this rather long thread.

Sorry it’s so long. There is basically now two ways of accessing recordings to use on other kit,

The box has a new FTP server (file transfer protocol server) that can copy SD recordings direct to a PC that can be used on other kit that does not work for HD content, and a Web based interface that can download a SD file to a PC. What happens is a tad technical.

Downloading HD source content to a mobile android device is easy, using the aura app is easy . Making it available on say a laptop is not so easy.

I would start a new thread like how to download content from the aura for use on other kit, before the details get lost in the general thread.

No experience of MAC pC’s but other members do.

If you have windows 10 laptop I can help.

Thanks. So you can’t do the same with the FVP-5000T? I recently tried to watch HD with the live TV app but it didn’t let me. I presume you can’t convert the content on the 5000 to SD.

    Yes you can

But the response to the remote is very slow on a FVP-5000T

I moved from a 5000T to the Aura in November and have not regretted it. Much better and faster UI.

The recent 9.14 update has resolved many of the early issues. There are still some niggles, the main one for me being periodic pixilation/sound break-up in some recordings which I didn’t see on the 5000T; I have 80%-90% signal strength (manually attenuated) with 100% signal quality so its not that. Humax seem to be responding to customer feedback and hopefully these issues will be fixed sooner rather than later.

Possible Con No Netflix but does have Amazon Prime. If you have another source for Netflix – not an issue.

Is it likely ever to get Netflix do we know?

The question most would ask is “does it actually matter” given Netflix is already available from so many other different sources.

I suspect the issue with Netflix is commercial rather than technical so while I don’t think anything will change in the short term, I think there is a chance it might happen in the future.

I think given the box has a Chromecast built in, the necessity to have an App to drive any current or new streaming service is not there. Having said that, the convenience of using the remote to scroll through and select options from those services which do have a built in app is better; as a consequence I’ve definitely used my NowTV account less since I had the Aura, even though I could quite merrily cast it either using the built in Chromecast or my dongle that I’ve still got in place in the HDMI3.

Having said that, there really should be no good reason why one flavour of Android TV has services A B and C available whereas another flavour has only B C and D available etc. One of the pro’s for me of Android TV is that it should take the onus off the box-maker to partner with the relevant services to get the features available on the TV. Maybe it will just be a matter of time. I know still some Android phones can’t operate certain apps, but that has diminished hugely over time, and now if you bought an Android phone on version 10 or 11 you’d be rightly surprised if you found that that one didn’t support Netflix or NowTv etc.

but when considering whether to change from my FVP-5000T, if I have to also buy another device so I can watch Netflix, that does matter!

Assuming you’ve got a phone, can you not Chromecast Netflix to the Aura? So you wouldn’t need to buy another device?

(Apologies if that is a stupid question, I’ve not had a Netflix account for a few years!)

Please can you explain how the file transfer FAQ for the FVP-5000T provides a method of converting HD recordings to SD?

But the Aura also has Chromecast built in so you can get Netflix through that. Besides nearly every smart TV also has apps which support Netflix.
