    Hi all,

    Strange one this.

I had a strange issue in the house earlier and everything glitched for a second or so – all electronic devices (complaints re Xbox stopping etc).

I was watching something on the Aura at the time – it started a reboot but took ages to come back. Unplugged it for a while, reconnected and after the Android logo part of the startup I just had a black screen for about 5 minutes before it came back.

Did a restart from the Freeview button, far right power menu and all came back fine.

But now I can’t play any recordings. They are all listed but opening any of them just gives a black screen with the initial orange bar and time counter. Can’t play / fast forward or anything, it just stays a black screen.

Live TV is fine and I have restarted the box again and the symptoms are the same – live TV fine but recordings won’t happen.

I’ve seen a few hints on line but none of them have had any effect.

Has anyone experienced this before and got any pointers they can share to get it working again?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards

What hints did you get online, you should tell us.

My initial thoughts are that the power outage may have caused damage to the Aura HD.

You say live TV is fine but are you able to pause and rewind live TV.

The Aura creates a buffer up to two hours of the channel you are watching and this is saved on the HD.

Watch a channel for about 5 minutes and then see if you can rewind it.

If it works then the HD is okay.

If it hasn’t then do a full power cycle.

Long press on power button on the remote, select OK.

Wait till the LED goes out and unplug.

Wait about two minutes, plug in and press the power button.

    Any change.

It wasn’t really a power outage – not sure what it was, it was just some weird glitch that affected things. We didn’t lose power, no resetting of devices, but connections dropped for a couple of seconds and then carried on once re-established. Almost like an internet drop, but that normally displays itself differently to this. It was sharp and sudden but an internet drop would have taken longer to recover.

That’s a good shout re: the pausing and rewinding – that does not work either. I can pause, but when I resume it just jumps to the live position and I can’t take it back at all.

I suspect, based on this and what you have mentioned above, that this suggests that the internal HDD has indeed failed. And it’s over 2 years old now, alas.

Looks like I’ll be replacing it then – need to decide if I want to go for the same again (we all know how to use this one and the 3 recordings plus 1 view is very handy) or do we go for a Manhattan T4 instead – but that only has 2 recordings at a time, although is supposed to be the better box now…

You may well be able to buy and fit a replacement HDD instead of replacing the Aura itself. I was able to do this on my previous Humax YouView box for the £40 cost of a replacement HDD. Might be you searching YouTube for instructions on how to do this, to see if it is possible and within your comfort zone.

Oh I’m very happy with taking things apart and swapping parts (have taken many a laptop into pieces in the past) so that’s not a concern. Just wonder if it’s worth doing this on a 2-year old device that’s now out of warranty anyway…

I am swaying more towards the T4R at the moment and replacing the Aura.

I think there is a good chance that the hard drive hasn’t failed but the file system has been damaged which is repairable. Go to Settings> Device Preferences> Storage> Hilight Internal HDD and press OK and a Format option will be offered. Obviously this will delete all recordings. If you do go this route than please let us know whether it worked.

It would be good to not lose the recordings ideally…

I’ve seen about the Reset as well – resets the box back to default but keeps recordings. I may try that first just in case that actually brings anything back.

    Hmm – plot thickens.

Just went to check something and recordings that were made AFTER the weird glitch yesterday evening are playing Ok. Recordings BEFORE it (and there’s loads!) won’t…

I would guess the encryption key has changed; I haven’t seen this reported before on an Aura but it is a problem on some other Humax boxes. Watch and delete the recordings made after the incident and then put the box in standby and turn off the electrical power for 30s and then restart the box and see if the before recordings will play.

Thanks – will give that a try in a while and feed back!

If you think all other aspects of the Aura are working then you may consider just replacing the HDD.

Go to You Tube and see if there are any tutorials.

    Try this one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRyWwnOVWSQ

Look for 1TB or 2TB 2.5 inch internal hard drives, such as this,

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=1TB+2.5+inch+internal+HD&crid=PLDPHO32W4AO&sprefix=1tb+2.5+inch+internal+hd%2Caps%2C134&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

Alas, no difference. The new recordings were fine – play, rewind, fast forward – but old ones still not doing anything.

I can however now pause and rewind live TV which could not be done before, but the inaccessible recordings is an issue.

Okay so the HD sounds as if it is working if you can record and watch recordings made post glitch,

and the live buffer is working also.

Did you delete your post glitch recordings and do a full power cycle as Martin described.

But you are still unable to watch your older recordings.

    Yes exactly as stated.

I’ve just done a reset on the device as I’m rapidly losing interest.

Set all up again as required and it now won’t even play live TV even though it found 168 channels.

Just sits on the home screen and anything I press goes black for a second and then gives the same screen again.

I’m giving up and have got a T4-R ready to collect from the local Argos (other stores are available).

Thanks to all for the pointers on here but whatever happened last night appears to have killed it

Please let everyone know how you get on with the T4-R.

    Thank you.
