Hi all, an update on my Instant Record issue on my 5000T, which despite reporting that it’ll record until the end of the EPG time, actually only records what’s in the buffer plus approx 1 minute.
I tried an instant recording and it worked perfectly (Box on Channel 4, about 45 minutes into a hour programme). It produced a perfect 1 hour recording. Can you provide a precise recipe for triggering the problem please.
Did you record the Values of the individual SMART parameters? I am interested in the Raw values of the following attributes: 05 reallocated sector count, 197 Current pending sector count and 198 Offline uncorrectable count.
To me, the narrowness of the fault still seems to point to a Jan 21 update bug which seems to affect some versions of hardware. Any minor flaw in its actual loading would surely cause far more catastrophic failures in the machine’s operation, as would a hardware failure?
According to what Barry has said the change in the latest update was a fix for the Youtube search function which involved updating the version of the Opera browser that the Apps use. It doesn’t immediately seem to me that it is the sort of change to introduce a problem with instant recording but who knows. Is your box an FVP-4000T or an FVP-5000T?

I’m just concerned that I wouldn’t be able to return the new drive if that didn’t fix the problem.
If you buy it over the Internet then the Distance Selling regulations apply and you have 14 days to return it.
Would the Humax recognize and use a 2TB disk?
Definitely. I have a 2TB drive in my HDR_FOX T2 which has given faultless service for many years.
I’m tempted to try the custom firmware route could that not work or is it definitely irreparable damage to the disk?
It is absolutely impossible to say from a distance whether the damage is irreparable. By all means install the custom firmware and post the information about the Hard Drive in the Diagnostics section of the web interface. This will provide the SMART data to give a reasonably accurate diagnosis of the state of the hard drive. My view about replacement is based on past experience helping other people; your hard drive sounds in a bad way but the SMART data via the custom firmware will be the best way of deciding.
If the custom firmware is a good idea what is the best way to get the Humax connected: a wifi dongle(which one?), an ethernet cable plugged into a wifi extender(eg TP-Link for £15 from Argos) or ethernet cable into my Win10 laptop?
Any of those would work. The ethernet cable into the laptop is the cheapest but a little more fiddly than the others. Personally I use Powerline adapters to connect my PVRs to the router.

I took it to the same local tv repair shop but after trying and failing to fix it he said it must be a problem with the motherboard or firmware. So I would greatly appreciate any advice?
It sounds to me as though the file system has been marked read only to prevent further corruption. Given what you have said I think a new hard drive would have a very good chance of restoring full functionality. It isn’t a difficult DIY job but if you don’t feel confident then take it to a computer repair shop and ask them to fit a Seagate Skyhawk drive of either 1TB or 2TB capacity.

You seem to know a lot more about the Hummy than I do (are you a Humax employee?) but from what you say, pausing live TV would also be affected.
I am not a Humax employee and I resent your suggestion that I might be; please apologise. I have been contributing to Humax forums for something like 15 years and have seen a lot of problems.
In my case it was not.
That is a piece of information we didn’t have before.
Also, this is still likely to be s/w because it is s/w that controls the partitions etc, if a disk were faulty, it is likely to be faulty across all partitions, or only on certain sectors (much smaller than partitions) which would cause intermittent problems which is not how it manifested itself for me.
File system corruption (which is not necessarily connected to an underlying hard drive problem) produces all sorts of strange problems. It is more of an issue on PVRs than normal computers because of the optimisations to hard drive firmware used in PVRs to prioritise playback quality over data integrity.
It was a fault that always occured, but purely when trying to record the current being-watched program.
Which is why I worry about the time shift buffer.

If it were the hardware of the disk drive it would be a more permanent OR a more randomly widespread issue, not this very specific single issue.
I disagree with your analysis. Starting an instant recording will access the partition that is specifically for holding the buffer for pausing live play. Any problems with the file system for that buffer are likely to cause a problem with a live record.

And says cannot find channels but i want to check ot actually works before i sell on?
Take it to a friends house who does have the correct type of LNB would be the best solution.

No, not possible.
Has anyone actually poked around in the file system to see if a file is created when using iPlayer? It is certainly true that a file is created when using iPlayer on the HDR-FOX T2 and the file contains the entire content watched.

My speaker is connected to my TV via the headphone socket and to the pvr by an RCA cable.
I am not sure if this is necessary but you might check if in General settings>Video turning on SD output helps.

I then formatted a usb stick and copied the update file on to it.
What file system is the USB stick using (FAT32, NTFS etc)? What type of partition table does it have (MBR,GPT)?

I still believe the narrow nature of the issue points to a weird software bug, but as you say Graham, I probably need a new hard drive, may be the hard drive can’t successfully copy/add to its own buffer recording.
I am sorry but I think it is very unlikely that it is a software bug. It is orders of magnitude more likely that it is a problem with the file system on the hard drive. The file system problem may or may not be a symptom of a hardware problem with the hard drive. The first thing I would do is remove the hard drive, attach it to a PC and have a look at the SMART data which holds the clue to the health of the hard drive.

It worked for around a day but unfortunately it’s stopped working again saying the network cable is unplugged.
Did it have the 192.0.2.100 IP address when it failed? Have you tried a different network cable?

Hi, a question, is there or will there be any way to create folders on the FVP-5000T?
There is currently no way and I am doubtful if Humax will add the feature. No harm in you asking them.

It would be nice if Humax could address the tuner issues. High pressure building today. COM7 teetering on the Aura whereas 2 LG and 1 Samsung TVs plus 1 Panasonic Freeview PVR are all rock solid on COM7.
It might help to clarify the issue if you quote reported signal strength and quality from the Aura so Humax know whether this is a high or low strength signal problem.

Its a huawei dg8041w router
Thanks. I will have a look at a manual tomorrow. In the meantime, what happens if you uncheck the boxes for Enable DHCP Relay and Enable Option 125?

What info do you need me to post regarding the router?
I may have missed something but start by telling us the make and model of router and a screen grab of the DHCP configuration page.
