I have written a Windows utility which simplifies the process. The graphical interface is fairly intuitive (to me, at least!) and it also offers the option of decrypting all the encrypted recordings on the device.
Well done look forward to seeing it. When you say it can decrypt all encrypted recordings, does that include HD content?

We’re currently investigating and working with Humax on a fix. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please rest assured that I’ve made your feedback available to the BBC iPlayer product team, including the Head of iPlayer via our audience feedback report. These reports help us to shape future decisions on our product and output.”
Hopefully this will get fixed in due course.
It is rather satisfying when somebody thanks you for reporting a problem and tells you that it will be fixed.

Having seen this thread, I was very uncertain about selecting instant record at about 12:55 this afternoon on BBC News (SD version – don’t have the HD version). Interestingly it behaved perfectly and recorded for nearly an hour until I stopped it manually.
That is the puzzle; it works perfectly for some people, sometimes works/sometimes doesn’t for some and never works for a few. I have no idea what is going on.

So clearly Humax are giving out incorrect advice and they need to be informed of this.
Sadly it happens all too commonly that Humax support give incorrect advice. I am sure it isn’t easy to be a Humax support person with a large portfolio of boxes all with different characteristics. In my experience I would always have a great deal more faith in advice offered by Barry than anything Humax support say.

Freesat 4k recordable
Thanks; is this the Arris produced box?
You said in your first post you had reset the Humax remote; have you tried using a different code set on the Humax remote (See https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/multi-code-function-fvp-remote (assuming you have an FVP-4000/5000T))?

Why don’t you put a drive in that is alien to you machine? If it’s formatted to NTFC your recorder should manage it perfectly.
Do you mean NTFS rather than NTFC? Why would that help? I would expect the FVP-4000T to want to reformat it.

I do have VLC on W10 pc but I’ll try your first idea and see how it goes.
If you have a Windows 10 PC then it is easier to do the transfer with the built in Windows 10 functionality (I think it was actually introduced at Windows 8 ) than with VLC. The first method of copying to USB storage works OK but is very slow.

I’ve only had it working for a couple of days and am still in the “playing” stage so I’ve not even watched a whole program on it yet.
I’ve recorded some stuff and it appears in the “Recordings” and I’ve played back “bits” and they worked, but nothing thorough yet, just getting used to how it works really.
Understood. I think my advice would be try it and see what happens; don’t be too surprised if you need a new drive at some point in the future.

Both the cable and TV HDMI port works fine with other devices. Strangely though the composite output works fine but the picture is obviously not as clean. When connected via composite I checked the settings to try a different HDMI resolution and noticed that the HDMI settings are all greyed out. I decided to just watch via composite and the box started to cut out after about 20 mins…it would just power off. It does feel rather hot and also the fan doesn’t seem to kick in.
Is the box well ventilated with nothing on top of it. It sounds as though it could be overheating and may start working again when the ambient temperature drops. If it doesn’t try taking the lid off (with power disconnected obviously) and see if there is dust inside that needs removing.

My machine is four years old. I recently had to disconnect & move everything for new carpet & furniture but when re-connected the Humax does not respond at all to the remote. It will turn on & off and change channel using the buttons on the front. Have tried the “Press 0 + OK for 5 seconds or more” thinking this might reset the remote code & restore its functions. No joy.
Is the Humax close to any other electrical equipment? If so try switching the other equipment off or moving the Humax well away from other equipment to see if it starts recognising the remote.

All recordings are in SD
There are two ways of removing the encryption from SD recordings: either copy to attached USB storage see https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/how-to-archive-recordings-to-usb-hdd or if you have a Windows 10 PC then download them from the DLNA server (Network server in Humax terminology) see https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/file-transfer. The second method is a bit fiddly to get working at first but transfer rate is far higher once working; I can provide more detailed instructions for the second method if you are struggling. If you don’t have a Windows 10 PC then you can use a variation of the second method using some other software to capture the DLNA stream; VLC media player is a good candidate.

My 5 year old 4000 has been playing up for a while now, and despite regular factory resets is still misbehaving.
So I’m buying a 5000 from currys and was looking for an easy way to transfer recordings box to box.
SD or HD? SD is doable but HD is tricky. You can’t copy the recordings from one hard drive to the other as they are encrypted with a key unique to each box.
