It was recorded on BBC HD so guess it is HD
Oh dear; I don’t think the HD recording can be played on any other device because it is encrypted and there is currently no way to remove the encryption.

It is a Humax Foxsat-HDR
Thanks. The Foxsat doesn’t have a model number. Is the treasured recording in Standard Definition or High Definition?

I bought a new humax box last July. But because I have a recording on my existing box & don’t want to loose the recording & can’t get it off I haven’t started using new box.
Could you tell us which model of PVR the new and old PVRs are please?
If I unplug the existing box will I lose the recording? I absolutely can’t lose it.
Just removing power won’t cause loss of recordings. If the recording is so precious it would probably be a good idea to back up elsewhere; we may be able to help with that when we know the exact model of PVR for the old box.

I’ll pull the drive and connect it upto one of my PCs (Linux or Windoze) I was thinking it might have some media errors or file system corruption. I could do a full format too.
I would connect the drive to a Linux computer and first of all look at the SMART data for the drive (post it here for help in interpreting it) and then try running Linux file system repair tools and see what is reported.
Worst case then is to replace the drive which I can probably “borrow” from one of the machines I have around. I am guessing that the max supported capacity is around 2TB?
In the short term any SATA hard drive you have will do for testing; ideally a long term replacement should be a drive designed for PVR usage. You are correct that 2TB is the upper limit.

Is this converting using the phone app or using a different method, thanks.
I do it through the user interface on the box and then FTP the converted recording off the box.

Humax used to be really good at keeping things updated.
True and there was a recent update for the HDR-FOX T2 to fix an iPlayer issue which was 7 years after the previous version.

I do have a smart TV so i can watch these on there though if needs be.
I’ve spotted the FVP – 5000T which has 3 Tuners and seems quite decent for the price. It looks to be a current model. Any chatter on whether it’s due to be discontinued?
The FVP-5000T probably won’t get much, if any development and currently ITVX isn’t available on it.
I also saw the Aura 4K Android box.
I know nothing about the Android TV OS. Is it the next big new thing?
Is it in effect a Hummy PVR with smart tv like apps availability?
If so is there a definitive list of what’s available? eg Disney plus, Now, Plex, AppleTV, Paramount etc etc?
My personal preference is for the Aura which is a reasonable box but it does have quirks and Humax have gone quiet about whether there will be future software updates. Out of the box it has Amazon Prime, Kids, YouTube plus the usual UK TV players. You should be cautious about assuming that other Apps in the Playstore will work; some do, some don’t. You will find that some people will tell you the Aura is awful; I think it depends on what people were hoping it would do.
Does Freeview play allow catchup for all of the Freeview channels via the TV Guide? It doesn’t seem to work so well on my LG Smart TV. There seem to be lots of programmes unavailable.
I think you will find the same thing on the Aura; if the broadcaster doesn’t make the content available then the box can’t stream it.

I was hoping to take it over to Italy for my son-in-law, who had an interest in the programme’s subject matter. Maybe Channel 5 will repeat it one day, allowing me to capture the programme in SD format….
As I said pop over to the forum at https://hummy.tv for a solution.

I have an awful suspicion that the problem may be directly related to the fact that the recording was made from channel 105, and is therefore a HD recording….
What were you hoping to do with the copied recording? Even if you copy it, an HD recording would still be encrypted and would play only on the box that made the recording. There are ways around this but discussion of removing encryption is not allowed on this forum; try https://hummy.tv

Has anyone else lost subtitles on live SD channels?
They are there on SD recording playback and live HD channels and on our Sony TV.
I have just tested on my Aura and FVP-5000T. The Aura is showing sub-titles on live BBC content but not on the commercial channels I have tried. The FVP-5000T is showing sub-titles on the all the channels I have tested. I suggest you report the problem to Humax with details of which channels work and which don’t. Also probably worth reporting to ITV.

Ive connected with FTP and that works well. As long as you convert HD ts files you can download and watch on any device. Obviously downloading decrypts the file.
My understanding is that it is the conversion that removes the encryption on HD recordings. I think on the Aura SD files are not encrypted.

The controller supplied with the Aura has many buttons, many of which I don’t need such as the Kids and Text buttons.
Is it possible to remap these so that they open specific apps for example?
Not as far as I know but if you find a way then please tell us how.

New Humax’s are sold with a 2 year warranty.
I thought it was one year warranty that could be extended to two years if registered within 30 days of purchase?

Can anyone with a working unit confirm whether or not they can hear the HDD spinning when it’s on?
I think you should be able to hear the hard drive spinning but the update would work without the hard drive connected. You are correct that the update is written to flash memory on the motherboard. Can I ask where your parents bought this box from?
