The Humax products (we own a PVR-9200T and an HDR-FOX T2) are so intuitive to use that even my technophobe partner uses them with great aplomb.

I have just purchased a Humax HDR-FOX T2 and want to connect to the internet via a dongle. Do I really require an expensive Humax dongle to do the job or will a cheaper version (£12-£15) do the necessary?

A cheaper dongle is perfectly adequate but please note that you must buy one that uses the same chipset as the Humax dongle i.e. you can’t buy any dongle that takes your fancy. One model that is reported to work well is the Edimax EW-7711UAn eg Link to Amazon

1Secondly, how should I connect my VCR player? Do I connect it directly to the TV or via the Humax PVR?

Directly to the TV. The HDR does not have a VCR in SCART socket.

I don’t have a 9300 so can’t say anything definitive but I would note that the usual complaint is that the volume level is fixed (ie not influenced by the Humax remote) rather than zero volume. As a matter of interest have you considered a SCART connection rather than HDMI? The 9300 only receives SD broadcasts so upscaling must take place somewhere and several people have reported that with their particular TV the effect is better with a SCART connection and the TV doing the upscaling; just a thought.

Has anyone got a clue as to whether I’m barking up the wrong tree in thinking it could act as a digital receiver in a different country?

Digital transmission standards are different in different countries; I don’t know the exact position with Australia but my starting point when moving country would be to assume it won’t work and be pleasantly surprised if it does work. You might research whether there was an equivalent Humax model for the Australian market and if so whether it is possible to fool your box into using the Australian software (NB this a very risky strategy as if the hardware is different you will render your box useless).

But 1.00.08 is an ancient version. I would suggest checking that the system ID is correct as the 9300 has a tendancy to corrupt the system ID which then prevents all software updates until corrected.

ok thanks, is the LV important, is this why the EPG takes a long time to load up from standby.

The newer loaders start a little quicker and fix a bug where if you have a masthead amplifier that is powered by the Humax, OTA software updates would fail.

Humax have opted to replace the unit today so I will start afresh and hone down the channel list.

Honing down the list of channels when receieving from more than one transmitter is exactly the wrong thing to do. As Biggles says you need to do a manual tune which might sound complicated but is actually very simple. You can then remove any unneeded channels from the manually tuned list.

I set the PVR to record whilst out or overnight but it when I go to view, some programmes show as “failed recording – 0 Minutes. The problem is sporadic and isn’t identifiable as one channel causing the problem.

Is your box correctly tuned? One symptom is channels numbered 800 and above.

Prices may fall as the factories come back on stream.

I am quite certain they will fall as there will be massive over supply before too long.

I have a PVR 9150T and when you connect it up, it defaults to the TV’s AV1 channel. But, if the TV is tuned to a station and you switch to the Humax you can hear sound coming from the TV programme through the AV1 channel. Sometimes you can see a very very faint ghost picture as well behind what you are viewing on the Humax.

Can anyone advise me on what to do please.

Get a properly screened SCART lead or remove pin 19 from the TV end of the existing SCART lead.

it then says the syntax is incorrect.

    C:Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsDownloadshumaxrw-1.14-win32

    This is the directory

probably the spaces in the file name confusing things. Either move humaxrw to a directory immediately below c: (and with no spaces in the directory name) or quote the cd command something like:

    cd “Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsDownloadshumaxrw-1.14-win32”

what happens when you type (at a command prompt):

    humaxrw 1: -r -l

    ?

Unfortunately the usb connection is not registering on the computer whether the Humax is switched on or not. I am wondering where I have gone wrong?

I don’t understand why you have chosen to download Media Controller. It will not work in the circumstances you described previously. The only software that will work is humaxrw which must be used in recovery mode (-r command line option).

Interesting. This evening had my 9200 and also the Vestel …both set for accurate recording…to record the same programme (Hustle). The Vestel start time was spot on but the Hummy lost the first 5-6 seconds.

This has been done to death in the past. Extensive and thorough testing suggests that the 9200 starts later than a Vestel by a random amount typically up to 10 seconds but sometimes greater. The 9150/9300 behaved similarly up to software version 1.00.23 but 1.00.26 was intended to improve the behaviour but I haven’t seen any reliable test results. My supposition is that the 9200 polls to check for a change in the running status at an interval of typically something like 10s unless it is busy when the poll interval increases.

For the record the later HD models do a much better job with accurate recording.
