I was asked if I wanted to format the drive.
Presumably you said no?
Humaxrw can’t see the drive either.
At a guess you have allowed Windows to overwrite the partition table on the Humax. Try
humaxcheck x: -p -w
where x is the correct drive number for the USB attached drive. You should then be able to use humaxrw to download the programs to a PC. As far as I know humaxrw will not correctly put the files back on the Humax 9300T (it will on a 9200T) so you will either have to watch them via the PC or burn them to DVD.

Second was the Humax 9300T, which stopped time shifting a long time ago.
That is a fixable problem (corrupt time shift buffer).

“custom firmware” – how do I go about finding and installing it?
Start at http://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Main_Page You install it from a USB memory stick in the same way as a normal manual firmware update. Note that it doesn’t replace the standard firmware, it enhances it.

The clock on my 6 year old 9200 died
Just for information, that is a fixable problem.
Same again tonight and it tells me the HDD needs formatting and has zero content.
This is a known problem with the hard drives used by the Humax; the easiest fix is to install the custom firmware that has special tools to correct the problem, usually without loss of data. If you don’t want to do that then a format is the only fix.

I have just bought a digital TV and continue to use my HDR-Fox T2 for recordings. After attaching my aerial connection to the HDR and then on from there to the Digital TV with a scart extension going the same way,
In addition to what Barry said, if you have a new TV you should consider using HDMI rather than SCART for the connection from the Humax to the TV; this should give better picture quality.

Why do you want to use a splitter instead of connecting the aerial-out socket of the HD-FOX-T2 to the TV?
Perhaps because the HD-FOX only has one tuner and he wants to watch something on a different MUX? I think the answer to the OPs question is providing you have reasonable signal strength with the splitter in place (above 40% signal strength would be fine in my expereince, others suggest 50%) and the TV is Freeview enabled then it should be fine.

Any reason to avoid the 9300T?
Any suggestions for other Humax twin-tuner models to consider, up to say £150? (She is looking for a ‘basic’ PVR and does not have an Internet connection)
The 9300T has a number of moderate problems and it isn’t clear whether Humax will update the software to fix them. For just slightly more than her £150 budget (£159) you can get an HDR-FOX T2 which is a significantly better PVR than the 9300 and software updates for it are still trickling out. If her requirements only require a single tuner then a Grade A HD-FOX T2 plus a USB hard drive would be another option that is well within budget.

it is formatted ext3/4 and works fine but it is nearly full.
Does the HDR understand EXT4? I would check that it is formatted EXT3 and see if that works.

I have no sound on BBC1 only !!!! Any ideas
Odd. Which Humax box do you have? How is it connected to the TV (SCART, HDMI)?

Television.
We assumed that much; I think the intent of the question was to enquire about the make and model of TV you are using.

1. Can the timers be padded? And if the recording can be padded, does this still allow series record on subsequent programmes?
Yes you can specify padding and yes padding works with series record however you need to consider whether you actually require padding; the accurate recording works much better on the HDR than it did on the 9200 and on the major channels is almost faultless.
4. Downloads; I assume there is no easy way of downloading files off the Fox T2? I am used to getting my recordings from my 9200 using the Son_T mod to my USB port on the laptop in no time flat. Is the same mod possible on the Fox T2, although I can see any warranty issues will be out of the window?
You need to be aware that all recordings on the HDR are encrypted. Using the standard software SD recordings can be decrypted by copying to an attached USB drive but not HD recordings. However there is a user community developed custom firmware which provides enhancements to the standard firmware. These enhancements include a number of methods for decrypting recordings (including HD) and methods for transferring recordings over the network.
5. Can folders be created and files moved between folders on the Humax drive?
All series recordings are stored in automatically created folders. You can move recordings between folders. The custom firmware provides various enhancements in this area as well.

I thought the Fox T2 and T1000 were identical other than the youview function.
The hardware is similar (rather more powerful on the Youview box) but the software providing the core PVR functionality is different (I believe the Youview software is the same on the various Youview boxes from different manufacturers). There is a list of things the Youview box can’t do over at hummy.tv (which may not be completely up to date) at Link to hummy.tv Youview thread
What features make the FOX T2 better in your opinion? I am interested to know as the You view is appealing, but not if it’s at a cost elsewhere in functionality.
It is currently at a significant cost; the Youview box is being updated and some of the quoted limitations may vanish. However if your prime requirement is to transfer recordings to external storage then the HDR is a much safer bet at the moment. The SD recordings will be decrypted by copying to an attached USB device: the HD recordings will not; however there are ways of overcoming this limitation.

Am looking at a DTR-T1000 (You View model) and will buy it if I can transfer old recordings to an external hard disk somehow.
Your requirement is met by the Humax HDR-FOX T2 and in my view it is a better PVR than the DTR-T1000,

Dose downloading beta software effect the warrantee if things go wrong?
Generally speaking you will only get access to beta software if you are a beta tester. Software from the Humax beta site is not what I would regard as beta software. If you look most of the software is labelled “Official Release”. If it is that software you are talking about, I think it is highly unlikely that it would affect a warranty claim.

I tried using quite a few – 24, 27, 39, 40, 41, 42, 45 – these were listed as some of the channels for the 2 closest transmitters
You haven’t quite got the hang of this. The idea is to use channels from a single transmitter. I would suggest deleting all the channels and doing another manual tune on 27, 24, 42, 45, 39 only. Make sure network search is off.
