but because that transmitter does not have the full range of channels, we have had to leave some tuned to winter hill. Is that likely to cause problems?

The series link and accurate recording facilities will not work properly in those circumstances. The only option is to use padding.

The other option is my T2 box is over six years old

Really? According to this link http://www.techradar.com/news/home-cinema/high-definition/humax-hdr-fox-t2-uk-release-date-made-official-706814 the release date was August 2010.

I agree with Graham that DLNA software has been one common cause but other software (eg Power DVD) has also been implicated.

Will it be a case of purchasing a longer Ethernet cable?

If a longer Ethernet cable is feasible that will give the best performance and the lowest cost. If not you might consider Homeplug adaptors that carry the Ethernet signal over the mains wiring eg Link to Amazon very straightforward to install and use and work well in the home environment.

can’t imagine how you came up with the solution!

I think you will find that it was a very careful and scientific investigation of the problem.

my 3 year old 9300t usually works fine but on occasions it misses a recording within a series record schedule, an example of this, just recently on the 21st April “a man of Interest” on channel 5 did not record.

What software version is the box using? Are you confident that it is tuned to a single transmitter?

I don’t know what steps to take next.

So what is it you want to do with the custom firmware?

My normally faithful PVR seems to have lost all the recordings. They’re still showing as being there on the ‘Recorded Programme’ screen but they won’t play and the little pre-view screen’s black/blank.

At a guess the file system on the hard drive has become corrupt. The fix, if that is the problem, is easy: you format the hard drive from the HDD Control menu item in the Record Menu. This will of course delete all the existing recordings. If they are important then you could probably get them back by connecting the hard drive to a PC and using humaxrw before formatting; see Link to humaxrw

I’m not too sure about cable select CS, I’d be tempted to use master.

My recollection is that the correct setting is cable select. I agree with the advice to check for bent pins.

My signal STRENGTH is at 60-70% and the QUALITY is around 100% on all muxes. The weird observation with the HD mux is that the quality bar flickers (on the tuning screen) between 100% and 0%, back and forth every now and again. I’m presuming that’s what noise looks like.

OK so that is a reasonable signal strength; I don’t think attenuators will help. I agree this looks like noise and if it isn’t the HDMI lead then the prime candidate would be the amplifier. I would get the aerial installer back to look at the problem.

Another factor I forgot to include is my Onkyo amp, which is taking the signal from the Humax (HDMI) and then taking it to the Panasonic (again via HDMI). Presumably this could also be adding noise or affecting the picture?

    I doubt it.

I have bought a USB-IDE adapter with plug and connected it.

It is along time since I have done this. The drive will have a jumper to say whether it Master, Slave or Cable Select mode. Try changing the jumper so that it is Master and try again (make sure you note how it is originally so that you can put it back as it was afterwards). Also my adapter has a label that I have taped to the side saying ” Ensure IDE adapter plug is central in drive data connector”; I think with my adapter it is possible to plug it into the drive and connect to the wrong pins.

How would it be that the signal strength is only negatively affecting the HD mux, by the way?

I wish I knew the answer to this sort of question. There is something about the Humax tuners that seems to make them more susceptible to various sorts of aerial problems than a lot of other kit.

However, Humax HDR FOX T2 (1st floor) connected to Panasonic HD ready telly is breaking up on the HD channels. I’ve read around the forums and thought maybe it was signal strength (seems to be around 100% strength to 60% quality on each mux)

100% strength is way too high. It sounds as though there is an amplifier in the circuit and it is over amplifying the signal and saturating the Humax tuner. Talk to the installer and see if the amplifier gain is variable and if so turn it down. If not the options are to try without the amplifier or to fit an attenuator in the aerial cabling to bring the signal level down. I would aim for a signal strength on the Humax between 50% and 90%.

Thanks to all for help, but I can do WITHOUT SARCASM!!

Please don’t shout. The problem is that you are not good at describing exactly what you are doing which makes it difficult for the people attempting to assist.

In another post somewhere I saw a link to the type of lead I need to use humaxrw, but now I’ve lost it. Can you please direct me to what I need? I guess I have to take the hard drive out of the Humax?

You need a USB to IDE adapter such as Link to eBay. It is a while since I have done it; it may be possible with the drive in position but if not it is only four screws to remove it.

sorry? can’t understand what you mean.

Graham is suggesting as a test you remove the aerial in and out leads from the Humax and connect them together so that the aerial feed goes direct to the TV. If that doesn’t work then the problem must be the aerial lead from the Humax to the TV.
