Ok thanks I’ll plug it in and see whats on there, will it put the latest software on itself via the ariel using the update scan or does it need to be via pc?
An manual update scan will only pick up updates when they are being transmitted which is typically only for two or three days every couple of months. In addition for some unfathomable reason 1.02.32 has not been transmitted so far although it is being installed on production boxes.
Why is it not good to use the padding? I just found it useful if the program ended after it should have, in the case of my 9200T it would chop the end off! or is the new box more inteligent?
The 9200 had a bug that could in some circumstances lead to it chopping off program endings; the implementation of accurate recording is much better on the HDR. If you have padding then you greatly increase the possibility of scheduling clashes. The choice is yours; all I am saying is that don’t automatically assume that you need to use work arounds that may been important on the 9200. Try it without and then implement them where you find the need.

Got it changed today for the HDR Fox T2 the 1Tb.
Can you advise the best way to get the latest humax upates plus the custom update and anything else I need before I get it set up.
The latest software is 1.02.32; it may be installed on the box. If not you can download it from http://beta.humaxonline.co.uk/downloads/hdr-foxt2
I would suggest getting used to the standard firmware before installing the custom firmware (The user interface on the TV looks identical with or without the custom firmware; the additional features of the custom firmware are accessed via a web browser from a PC etc); when you are ready you can get it from http://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Custom_Firmware_Overview.
I think you talked about adding padding to recordings but I suggest you experiment with relying on accurate recording without padding which works very well for us on the HDR.

I have had a reply from Humax:- “Unfortunately the PVR-9300T models do not have the ability to retreive recorded programs from them and the hard-drives on which these are stored are using a EXT-3 file structure, which would most likely require specific software to read a Linux partition.”
It is shocking that Humax should send you a response that is so technically incorrect. The file system has nothing to do with Linux; it is proprietary and specific to a small number of Humax designs,

Would you go for the extra space of the 1TB model or is 500gb plenty? (we found the 160gb ok on the 9200T but we did’nt have HD to think about).
A matter of personal preference and viewing habits. We have the 1TB model but could probably manage with the 500MB model.

Any opinions on the latest panasonic gear? I hear they have given Humax a good run for there money with the lastest spec stuff.
You are much more likely to get a sensible answer on a Panasonic Forum. Personally I gave up trying to find the absolute best of everything some time ago. These days I settle for plenty good enough and the HDR-FOX T2 meets that criterion for us. It is a mature product with relatively few quirks (and some of the quirks are addressed by the custom firmware) and reasonably reliable. The most commonly reported problems are hard drive related and as these are commodity parts are likely to affect all PVR manufacturers. The custom firmware provides excellent tools to monitor the health of the hard drive and fix problems caused by minor disk faults (like sectors pending reallocation) without losing recordings.

Sorry Martin, in this instance I think you’re mistaken.
Apologies I remembered wrongly. I still think there will be problems as the file system on the 9150/9300 does have subtle changes from the 9200 and humaxrw needed to be modified to work on them and I don’t see any mention of the work being done in the release notes for hdc.

Is the fox2 a better option?
Yes; see my answer above.

2) I could return the box and change it for another model, but which?
Take it back and get a Humax HDR-FOX T2. This has all the features you are missing and works in a similar manner to the 9200 but with lots of improvements. The main feature that is missing compared to the Youview box is that the only catch up service is BBC IPlayer. There is also a user community developed custom firmware for the HDR which works alongside the standard firmware to provide further enhancements.

I have ‘Googled’ for a Mac version of anything similar, but they are all old ones now not available.
As far as I know there has never been a humaxrw version for the Mac and nothing else would work for the 9150.

I have not tried programmed recording yet, but no programmes will record live using the ‘record’ button.
They say the only thing to do is to reformat and lose all my saved recordings!! Do you have any less drastic suggestions? Thank you.
I agree with Humax that a format is the only reasonable solution. If you wanted to keep the recordings and were prepared to open the Humax and attach the hard drive to a PC then you could download the recordings using humaxrw and you would then be able to play them on the PC.

I did a re-install and retune and the programmed recordings worked for a day, then stopped again.
Did you do an automatic retune or a manual retune? If automatic then I would suggest a manual retune using these instructions: Biggles manual tuning FAQ

I am not sure what the correct procedure is as to how to contact xyz321 but this seemed to be a good place to start.
Send him a PM.

Padding? whats that?
When the Recording Start Time or End Time is set to anything other than “On time”.
What i can’t understand is why a crappy £30 grundig tuner has no problems with BBC, yet both the Humax and the Hitachi PVRs i have really struggle.
What is the signal strength and quality reported by the Humax when tuned to BBC 1? (Menu>System>Signal detection)
