What is the custom firmware and how do I use it?

Start at http://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Custom_Firmware_Overview. It is installed in the same way as a standard firmware update. It doesn’t replace the standard firmware but works alongside it to provide various enhancements. You access the control interface of the custom firmware via a web browser. There are various packages that provide additional functionality that need to be installed separately. I think the one you require is called “Renumber”.

Have set up a favourites list but only now worked out how to access it. It’s not really the answer I was looking for. It’s just as easy to key in 101 for BBC1 HD. What I’d prefer is to key 1 instead and 17 for RTE1 rather than 309.

The only way to do this is with the custom firmware.

I have found some method but it uses Linux or telnet (my memory nowadays!!)

Make sure what you are reading refers specifically to the HDR 1010S as different Humax boxes have different capabilities in this respect.

The box is 30km from the transmitter and I’m not sure if I have an amplifier or not – aerial was fitted before my time several years ago.

30km is a reasonable distance from the transmitter such that unless there is a lot of amplification, too strong a signal should not be a problem.

I’ve never had trouble with scrambling with the TV. I think I’m going to give a manual tune a try otherwise I’ll have to refer to Humax Customer Service….!

I doubt that a manual tune will help but it certainly will not do any harm. Let us know if you find a solution.

My new pvr9300t scrambles all channels for just a few minutes on start up, after a few minutes it settles down and is fine. It doesn’t appear to affect recordings. When it scrambles I’ve checked signal detection and signal strength is 80-81% but quality switches between 40-100% but as I’ve said settled down after a few minutes.

That is a very unusual observation so I am unsure of the cause. How far from the transmitter are you? Do you have a signal amplifier in the aerial cabling ( either at masthead or a distribution amplifier or a signal booster)?

Has this problem ever been reported before?

Yes lots of times and it is usually a prelude to a more serious symptom of file system corruption. The issue is that the program description is held in a different file to the actual recording and if the file system becomes confused it points at the wrong one. I will repeat that my advice is to do nothing at the moment but be watchful and if any of the recordings are important and unwatched then watch them sooner rather than later.

For the past couple of months or so the description of a recorded program’s contents, as shown by pressing the “I” button, frequently does not apply to the actual recorded program – e.g., the description for an Agatha Christie film may refer to a Murder She Wrote.

One possible explanation is that the file system is starting to become corrupt. The only feasible fix for that is to format the drive from the HDD control menu. It may be a bit premature to do it now but if you start seeing problems such as duplicated recordings in the list of recorded programs or programs recorded under the wrong name then formatting without further delay is strongly advised.

You appear to have later version of software. 1.02.32 may be the latest Over air version but 1.03.06 is version that available on the humax download site

Has 1.02.32 ever been OTA? Do you have a link to 1.03.06?

I’ve just been through all the menus on my Panasonic Viera TV and I cannot see any mention of anything to do with the HDMI connections.

    What model number is it?

Start by telling us what software version your box is using.

Thanks Martin, any idea which client would be suitable for an ipad mini?

Sorry, no idea. Hopefully someone else can help.

These are hd series recordings. I tested a sd series recording and, seen from the folder in the Dlna client, there are files and they play. Suggests an hd only challenge.

The HD recordings will require a client that supports DTCP (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Transmission_Content_Protection) and they are not common. Probably the easiest solution is to install the custom firmware.

I just bought buzzplayer and it too is the same. See both hd and sd recordings perfectly.

However, I then set up series recordings. This results in empty folders in the multiple ipad Dlna clients.

Are these HD or SD recordings? Are you using the standard Humax firmware or the custom firmware?

For the last 2 years I have had no problem streaming recorded TV via wireless home network from my HDR to HD unit. Recently, the playback has ‘stuttered’ (as if it was buffering) and occasionally collapses back to the recorded list. Now it recognises the recorded TV items but will not/cannot connect to them at all.

How are the HD and HDR connected (hard wired network connection, homeplugs, WiFi)?

Where I am differing from all other contributors here is that I see a HDD in a PVR as “temporary storage “- a week a month maybe……Nothing life or business critical is or should be stored there – its for entertainment stuff – you cannot access the data from outside the machine environment or play the material…… Maybe a lot to do with copyright rather than technical issues

But an awful lot of users do not view the content of the hard drive in the same way as you and get very upset at the prospect of losing a carefully created library of programs. I agree that it is foolish to hold data on any storage device without a backup but providing non destructive ways of recovering the data is of value.
