hi the humax is connected via smart link scart and hdmi cable. the TV is a sony bravia about 6 years old
Why have you got both SCART and HDMI? Does it work better with only one of them connected?

If I boot up Twonky Media on my laptop PC and then boot up my HDR FOX T2 it re-boots after a very short period. Presumably it looks for DLNA servers at boot up. I was just wondering if it could possibly be a similar issue with the HDR10xx boxes.
In my view the reported symptoms indicate the Humax application is crashing but presumably for a different (but unknown) reason. I suspect the only proper fix will be a software update.

For no apparent reason, every single programme I’ve ever recorded has gone missing. The media display is simply blank. The only thing I can even begin to think of is that earlier this week I gave it a rescan to pick up the new BBC HD channels.
The rescan will be irrelevant. Can you pause live TV? If not I would guess the hard drive has a problem with the file system. The most likely way to sort it out (and there is no guarantee that it can be sorted) is to install the custom firmware and use fix-disk.

My mate is very happy. I carried out the suggested fix last night and now all working ok, save that he lost a number of recordings in the process.
So what exactly did you do? Note that the custom firmware would have fixed the problem without any loss of recorded programs.

Over the last couple of days however I am unable to record BBC1 and BBC2, but can still access the other channels. Has anyone had the same problem or can anyone suggest a solution.
Can you view live TV on BBC1 via the Humax? It sounds like it might be another automatic tune problem. The instructions for manual tuning are at Link to manual tuning FAQ

the custom firmware where do I get it and how do I install it…..once its installed can I then write back to any HD attached?
Head over to Link to Custom Firmware Wiki and start reading. Once you have installed the basic custom firmware then you need to install the NTFS 3g package. It will allow you to write to drives formatted with NTFS, EXT2/3, FAT32.

I have a HDR FOX T2- the HD drives I tried were both 2TB one was self powered and the other powered from the box-they both showed up but couldn’t copy to them.
Are the drives NTFS formatted? The HDR-FOX T2 will read from NTFS drives but will not write to them. Your options are to format the drives as Linux EXT2/EXT3 file system or format the file system as Windows FAT32 but that will limit the maximum file size to 4GB or install the custom firmware which has a package to allow writing to NTFS formatted drives.

Does the NowTV box mean paying a monthly subscription to get access to the on demand catch up players? Does it need an aerial or satellite or is it purely network based?
It is network based. They want to sell you a subscription but if you read the information on the site it appears to be possible to use the catch up players without a subscription. NB I haven’t got one so can’t be certain about anything. Maybe somebody else here knows more?

Would it be worth returning in exchange for the 2000t in your opinion?
Not sure that my opinion should count for much. If you feel that you will use the Youview catchup capability a significant amount the stay with what you have. If you will only use it a small amount then get an HDR-2000T and use the difference in cost to get a separate box to watch catch up channels such as the Now TV box Link to Now TV box.
When recently faced with the same dilemma, I had no hesitation in getting an HDR-2000T.

I ended up going with the 1010T. It seemed to have the same features plus Youview. Sorry for all the questions but is there any other difference between the two?
Sorry what I said related to the HDR-FOX T2. The Youview box has completely different software. In my view it isn’t as good a PVR as the HDR-FOX T2 (but may well be adequate for your needs) but does have more catch up channels. See Youview FAQ

Just a thought is the humax still available in standby mode?
It is not available on the network in full standby. I think it is available in the half awake mode when it wakes up 15 minutes before a scheduled recording.

Can I backup recordings to my computer through the usb port?
You can backup recordings to a USB storage drive attached to the Humax and then copy them to a PC. SD recordings will decrypted when copying but HD recordings will not although there are ways round this. You can also connect the Humax to your network and copy off recordings using FTP but they will remain encrypted.

Presumably one could swap the drives?
I doubt it as the recordings are probably encrypted using a box specific encryption key.
