Instead of the usual display of the time it’s just showing PVR-9300T. It seems to be trying to switch itself on as I keep getting the “loader” screen come up on the tv.

The most likely problem is corruption of data on the hard drive. The easiest way to tell if this is the problem is to unplug the mains, take off the lid, and disconnect the lead(s) to the hard drive. Replace the lid and reconnect the power. If it boots and works as a set top box then the problem is with the hard drive and is fixable; your options are to come back and ask for further advice or to pay someone to fix it.

    (1) The H.D. channels seem quite a bit louder than the S.D. ones.

    (2) The S.D. ones need the T.V. volume to be considerably higher to match what the T.V. produced on its own.

    (3) I don`t seem to be able to control the volume of H.D. channels using the Humax remote.

    (4) Is this all normal and explainable?

Does changing the Audio output type (Menu button >Settings>Preferences>Audio) to Stereo help?

Yeah I could, but I read that you have to use telnet and I have no idea how to do all that as I am pretty useless with computers! Is the web interface necessary as I never use the tv portal or iplayer stuff anyway?

The web interface would allow you to see the hard disk status data (SMASRT data) by point and click and that would quickly say whether the disk is really on its way out or has a problem that may be fixable. telnet really isn’t impossibly difficult and there is a good article at Link to huumy.tv wiki article on telnet.

Can the custom firmware be installed by just dowloading it to a usb stick and plugging that in the usb slot?

Yes but that only gives you the basic system without the web interface. Could you take the Humax to a friends house to install the full interface (an Internet connection isn’t required after the installation)?

The question is: does anyone know of any way of retrieving the recordings before she files for divorce?

The ONLY way of recovering the recordings is to open the box; connect the hard drive to a computer (usually easiest with an IDE to USB converter) and use humaxrw in recovery mode.

How about if they just replace the hdd on the unit. Will the HD recordings on the external drive be watchable?

    Yes.

Also, I find the buttons on the remote have become gradually more unresponsive, even with new batteries, and the ones used more often seem to be getting loose.

Doesn’t the extended warranty cover the remote?

So if they give me a new T2 to replace the broken one, will the HD recordings that i transferred to an external drive be playable on the new machine?

    No.

Can files recorded on other humax pvrs or other brands be played on the T2??

I don’t know about other brands; for the HDr-FOX T2 and HDR-2000T then SD files copied to an external drive will be decrytpted and can be played on a different machine; HD recordings will remain encrypted and only playable on the machine that made the recording.

Is the hard drive broke or is there another solution that i havent been able to find?

It certainly sounds as though the hard drive is having problems. The easiest way to be certain would be to install the custom firmware which will allow you to see the statistics about the health of the hard drive (SMART data). Changing the hard drive is not difficult nor too expensive if it is necessary.

I have my usb sata coverter and have attached it to the pc what do I do now?

Sorry for delay in replying, been rather busy.

Download a disk wiping utility such as Link to disk wipe

Unplug the Humax from the mains, take off the lid (5 obvious screws), remove the SATA leads from the hard drive and connect the SATA adaptor to the hard drive (if you bought an adaptor which came with a power supply then use that; if not leave the power lead from the Humax connected but be VERY careful not to touch the Humax power supply). Turn on power and use the disk wipeing utility to erase the Humax disk NB be very careful that you do not erase the wrong drive. Reconnect the Humax cables to the drive and when the Humax boots it should offer to format the disk; accept this and the box should be working again.

They were the only ones listed in EPG. Putting channel 1, 2 etc into keypad was just ignored in favour of the current choice.

You might try pressing the Radio/TV button (bottom left under the flap) and see if it puts you back in the same state.

Oh to answer the question, for future ref…they were all in the 700’s..Radio 1,2,3,4 and lots of indy channels. BUt all back up and running.

So how do you know that only the radio channels were saved?

Yesterday the PVR suddenly cut out with the ‘no or bad signal’ appearing. After all the usual plug unplug, I did a reinstall of channels. They were all ‘found’ but on saving only a few dozen music channels were actually saved, the rest were ignored.

It is an unusual problem. Can you give an example of the saved channels?

I’ve checked 4G mast interference and local mast problems. Nothing doing. It hasn’t been quite itself since I’ve been offloading to the PC, failing to record, slow and unresponsive. But this is on another level.

Software? Or has the hard disk had a meltdown?

This specific problem won’t be the hard drive as the channels are be stored in flash memory on the motherboard. Have you tried a reset to default settings?

In any case, the padding setting doesn’t affect the instant recording, which apparently needs some other remote control button presses to extend past where the TV station decides to press the ‘end of programme’ button.

No that isn’t right. Instant records will end at the scheduled end of program; far too many broadcasters pay scant attention to the scheduled times which is why it is usually necessary to extend the instant record.

Internet problem – try just accessing the internet settings menu, and exit.

Barry, do you know if anything will be done about this issue in a future software release?
