Thanks everyone for your help. Will be phoning richer sounds to “advise” them of the situation (presumably they got charged for fitting a new hdd??!!!)
Fifteen thousand power on hours is getting on for two years if the box was on continuously and more like four to five years of typical eight hours a day usage; they definitely didn’t fit a new hard drive. The other data doesn’t look too bad and the drive might be recoverable for now but in your situation I would press for the new hard drive that you were lead to believe had been fitted.

If you’ve got channels in the 800 range of channel numbers then you do need to do a Manual Search
does this mean that if i have NOT got any 800 range channels then everything is fine please?
It is a good sign but not a guarantee. One way to check is to find the list of multiplex channel numbers from the DigitakUK web site as per the Biggles instructions and then switch the box to one broadcast channel from each multiplex eg (BBC1, ITV, ITV3, Pick, 4Music) and use the Signal detection menu to check that it is coming from the correct multiplex.

Thanks for the pics Graham, which icon do i click on to run the diagnostic on my hdd?
You have been told twice already;click on “Diagnostics” and then “Hard drive”. Please try it rather than asking endless questions.

Do i need the telnet stuff?
Have I mentioned telnet? So why bring it up?
Also does the humax have to be plugged in to my friends tv so i can see what is happening ?? Or just so i can get the ip address of his router???
If your friend knows how to get the IP address of the Humax from the router (it isn’t difficult but will vary slightly depending on the router) then you do not need the Humax connected to a TV.

Would the humax have to be connected to the internet, if so, how do i do that?!!
Not necessarily.
My friends have routers but would i have to do some configuration stuff?
You plug the lead from the Humax into the router; that is it.
Will the lead that you use to connect your computer to the router work with the humax?
Yes. All that is needed is a standard network cable. Buy one for a £1 in a pound shop.
Do i just type the humax ip address in the bar at the top of the internet browser on my phone?
Yes.
How do i know if it has the web interface etc fully installed (is that what the Cust FW 2.23 means??).
It will have either the basic web interface (you can recognise this as all you will see will be a button inviting you to install the full interface; if the Humax is connected to the Internet then you simply click the button.) or the full web interface. The only way to find out is to point a browser at the Humax.
I may see if i can get a wifi dongle for the humax as i know i can tether my phone somehow!
Please don’t go down that route at this point as you are just going to make things more difficult.
Also, is it likely that the repair man removed the tamper seal without damaging it and replaced hdd and then stuck the seal back on…given that they know the box is over 2 yrs old (listed on job sheet)
How can anyone answer a question like that??? I have already told you that the hard drive keeps track of how long it has been powered on (in hours); it also records the number of times it has been powered on. The full web interface will allow you to access this data and answer the question for yourself.

Maybe a possibility to take it to a friends and have a try but i am seriously duff at using computers!!
It involves no more than determining the IP address of the Humax when connected to a network (which is done via the standard Humax interface using the remote) and then pointing a web browser (a tablet or a phone will do; doesn’t have to be a PC) and clicking on two buttons. Is that really too hard for you?
Is it possible to access the hdd physically without breaking the humax warranty seal?
Yes you can do it by using a hair dryer or heat gun to melt the glue on the seal.
It seems to me that they tried to repair it by using the web interface etc without replacing the hdd maybe?
Yes quite possibly. One of the attributes that is reported by the hard disk diagnostic is power on hours. If this is a new drive then it will be as many hours as you have used the box since repair. If an old drive it will be many thousands of hours.

I also noticed a message on front panel on start up that says custom firm..
If you have the custom firmware installed then you can point a web browser at the Humax and (assuming you have the full web interface) under Diagnostics select Hard Drive and then tell us the values of the following attributes
5 Reallocated_sector_ct
197 Current_pending_sector
198 Offline_uncorrectable
Also right at the bottom of the page are the results of the hard drive tests; tell us what they say.

Also tried doing the hdd test in the settings>system>data storage menu but doesnt work…first time was error code 8 i think and now it is error code 10 after trying the test a few times.
Sounds to me as though the test is working and is telling you that there is a problem with the hard drive.

Would I be right in thinking this update is the last one for the 9200t – v23?
1.00.23 is the most recent version for the 9200T.

Sorry, but if copying to a USB removes the encryption, why can’t one then view the files?
The point that Graham was making was that SD files can have the encryption removed by copying to a USB drive but as standard HD files cannot. There is a method but the discussion of such methods is not allowed on this Forum

I’ll hopefully be able to rescue the SD recordings I have on there.
Only if they already been decrypted.
If anyone can recommend a cable or dock to use with the HDD to copy off the files that would be great.
You can use a USB to SATA adapter (for a 3.5″ drive) eg Link to eBay which includes a power supply or any USB enclosure designed for a 3.5″ SATA drive

Is it even technically feasible?
Barry says it is technically feasible and has a pre-release version of the software working so personally I believe it is technically feasible. As for why Humax have chosen not to release it, I have no idea.

ditto what Graham said, although 2 x 2TB partitions should also work if that makes more sense
Really? I thought it would depend on the partition type; if it is GPT then I wonder if the Humax kernel supports it; if it is MBR then it will be limited to 2TB unless the USB hardware is presenting a large block size.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. As this Hummy is the 500GB version with many, many hours of favourite recordings, is there any other option that we might try first?
You said in your first post that you were not very technical. The only way other way to fix the problem is open the Humax, connect the hard drive to a PC and use humaxrw with the -D option.
