ParticipantTo get the old drive working again, try deleting the cached epg using
humaxrw 1: -Z

ParticipantIt has done a lot of hours (I don’t recollect seeing a drive from a Humax with as many as 79,337 hours) but seems to be in decent condition. I need to gout now but will have a think about what might be causing it not to boot up properly.

Anyone have any solutions?
At a guess the Western Digital USB drive is formatted as FAT-32. This limits the maximum file size to 4GiB. If you reformatted the drive (or used a different drive) formatted as NTFS it should copy programmes of any length.

Presumably the restrictions that allow archiving apply to all free view and freesat boxes?
The restrictions have differences on various different models. The current Freeview Play FVP models allow SD (but not HD) content to be decrypted and copied to a Windows 10 PC.

ParticipantOne thought is that now you can access the old drive, see if crystaldiskinfo or something else will access the SMART data. It might be easier to fix the problem with the old drive if it is still in reasonable condition.

I copied the files relating to a recording to a new folder, deleted the .hre file, ran ts2hrw and all I get is invalid number of argumanets (presumably arguments, sorry). There doesn’t appear to be a -h option to produce a list of options.
The Readme for humaxrw says ts2hrw *.ts
How do I reformat the new drive? Can I do it from my pc or do I have to return it to the Humax?
You have to return it to the Humax as far as I know.
Started looking at the link but it looks like a long read. Need to spend some time going through it to see if it can help.
It is a long read but there just MIGHT be something in the details that will help you.

The .hre files also came across. I then did humaxrw 1: -p *.hre and all the files, except the .hre files copied across to the new sata drive. When I do a humaxrw 1: -l I now have 70 files listed i.e. every file is duplicated.
What you have done sounds sensible to me but clearly isn’t working. The humaxcheck output looks a complete mess to me and I suggest you will be better off formatting the disk to start with a clean slate. I have messaged xyz321 who is the real expert to see if he can help. In the meantime I suggest you copy the four files for a single old recording to a different directory on the PC, delete the .hre file and use ts2hrw to create a new .hre file and then see if the four files will copy back to the 9300T.
You might also want to read this fairly detailed description of the process for a 9200T https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/restoring-recordings-and-list-to-humax-pvr-9200t

This implies to me that it will create the .hre files on my win10 pc but I already have them, so “It will not replace any existing hre files” means to me that I don’t need to run ts2hrw. How do I copy the .hre files across to my new humax drive?
Not certain but try humaxrw 1: -p *.hre
and why aren’t the existing recordings showing up?
Because the hre files are missing.

Martin Liddle; I suspect it might be that a good number of users leave their STB on permanently so they wouldn’t be aware of this problem which is reported by many users on this forum.
Why do you suspect that; it isn’t the default setting for the box. As I count it there have been five distinct reports in this thread (and a couple of those have subsequently reported that they believe the problem in their cases is caused by other remote controls). Clearly the issue exists but it doesn’t seem to be widespread.
In addition, others may not be aware of it being powered up due to the poor visibility of the status led’s on some surfaces.
That is a possibility. I am pretty confident that I have never seen our box power up unexpectedly.

I purchased a USB to SATA interface with external power supply and I can now read the files on the old drive.
Good.
I copied these to my win 10 PC using humaxrw 1: b and then connected up the new SATA drive and copied over the files using humaxrw 1: -p *ts. I got a warning that this may corrupt the hard drive but I decided to continue. All the files copied over and when I do a humaxrw 1: -l i can see the 4 files already recorded on the new drive plus the 31 rescued files copied over.
Can I just check that you have copied over both the .ts files and the supporting files for each recording?

There is an obvious issue with the design of this unit which is a shame because the fundamental operation works well.
If it is “an obvious issue” why do most other people not experience the specific problem?

I certainly expect that they not only have a plan but that they are also in the process of carrying it out.
It is good to be optimistic but on a box this old I would be less optimistic.

OK, it seems that there is no interest in this, so I’ll either give it away on Freegle, or scrap it.
Hang on, somebody over at hummy.tv was looking for one this week.

This problem has not been resolved and it has been more than a month now. I would welcome an update- any information on this anybody?
Have you spoken to Humax? Nobody else is going to know whether they have plans to fix it.

What followed was a bit of a disaster. My first mistake was to initialise the drive in disk management (Win10). Humaxrw/check couldn’t find it.
Humax check ought to be able to fix that problem. What exactly did you try?
I ended up using freeware testdisk and photorec to “recover” the files on the drive to another one.
So… I now have 74GB of numerous large .swf files, a few .mp3s, an .frm, a .ab and countless .txt files. My question is, is this game over or can I make this stuff work on the computer?
You could try renaming a .swf file with a .ts extension and see if VLC will play it.
The good news is
Go on, tell us the good news.
