Why can’t I remotely set my Humax 2000 to record from anywhere in the country?

Please can you be more specific about the model is it an HDR-2000T (Freeview) or a DTR-T2000 (Youview)?

Humax is wired ethernet to router.

OK; is it cable all the way or are there Powerline adapters involved?

Access media on the toolbar when focus is on "This PC"

Thanks didn’t know that; sadly it doesn’t work for me. What does work is with This PC highlighted, go down to Network and you should see the DMS server right click on it and select Open.

Anyone else seen anything like this and/or know if the problem might be with the humax, my network or something windows?

Hard to say but I would always start with the network; how is the Humax connected to the router?

I have been using file copy (from windows 10, windows exploring using “Access Media”->”Connect to Media Server”)

Just for my information where do you find “Access Media” ?

I am having no luck accessing bbq player on the humax box.

I can access other On Demand channels ITV etc but not BBC, opening page comes up but will not stream programmes.

This has only occurred in the last 10-14 days.

There is already a generic thread about this problem which seems to be affecting most Humax models of PVR see https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/iplayer-problem/page/8#post-80123

Hi Martin, another query for you on hard disks. I have tried to format disks above 1tb on a Foxsat HDR, eventually learning that they need to be formatted off the machine on a PC running Linux.

Not something I have done; this seems like a useful guide https://www.avforums.com/threads/humax-foxsat-hdr-%C2%96-upgrade-hdd-to-2tb.1336395/ Nb this was written before drives with 4kB drives became common so the numbers might need fiddling with. Alternatively something like MiniTool Partition Wizard should do it all from a Windows PC; make sure you use an MBR style partition table.

I’ve no experience at all of Linux so I would appreciate a few pointers if you can spare the time.

Any Linux distro will do but a simple, small one might be gparted https://gparted.org/livecd.php

Try pulling out the power plug from the wall socket for 30 seconds when recording a programme you do not want to keep.

Glad it has worked for you but there must be a risk of corrupting the file system by removing power suddenly. I would suggest trying a reset to default settings which will delete the schedule of future recordings but will leave existing recordings intact.

The connections are the same SATA ones and he is pretty sure that the Humax firmware will simply treat it the same as a conventional HDD. I can even buy a caddy to provide exactly the same physical fittings.

Has anyone done this before …. and did it work?

It has been done before and it does work. An SSD will have a life that is limited by the amount of data written usually expressed as TBW (Terrabytes Written); you will need a reasonable quality SSD to get a 5 year life if you do a lot of recording. However the only advantage of an SSD in a PVR is the lack of noise. The conventional hard drives are fast enough to cope with recording two HD streams and playing a third with a fair bit of headroom to spare.

I might have a look at the old HDD to see if I can recover anything but I suspect that it is completely defunct.

I suggest you connect the old hard drive to a PC and run something like Crystal Diskinfo (free) to access the SMART data and post it here; then we can see if the hard drive is defunct or the file system damaged.

OK … the new disk seems to be initialised but it’s showing as 76% used and 24% available because it must have the OS and data from an old PC still on it.

I think it is very unlikely there will be any old data. What capacity is the hard drive? Some space is always reserved for the root user (10% ?) under Linux; also there will be separate partitions for the the timeslip buffer and the apps which will account for some of the missing space.

Before formatting it, I decided to run the Humax HDD Test. It says “Processing … This may take a few minutes” with a spinning triangle but that’s been showing for 20 minutes already. How long does this test take to run?

It took just over a minute on my 2TB drive.

I’m assuming that the Humax is not looking for some boot software already installed on the HDD in a special partition or similar because it isn’t going to find it, of course.

As Graham has said that is certainly wrong as there is no software on the hard drive. Try tuning the power to the Humax off and then on again; also check that the HDMI connection to the TV hasn’t come loose. I am not sure about the FVP boxes but most earlier Humax boxes ask the user whether to format the hard drive when they detect a new hard drive.

This must be a total HDD failure.

It might be HDD failure but much more likely the filesystem has gone read only.

It appears that my Humax has reformatted its HDD in the middle of the night with no user intervention. I see that I’m on a June 2020 firmware but I’m not sure when it updated. If it was last night, it was a lot more than a simple update!

Has anyone else been through this bitter disappointment?

The software update was rolled out a couple of months ago and as far as we know only contained fixes designed to get the player apps working properly. I doubt the Humax has reformatted the drive; my guess is that there is some corruption in the file system; this is based on experience gathered from the HDR-FOX T2 with custom firmware. I would say your options are go ahead and format the hard drive or open the Humax and connect the hard drive to a PC and boot the PC with a live Linux CD (or USB memory stick). If you want to go down the latter route then you should consider opening an account at hummy.tv where the experts on file system repair can be found.

If I turn the unit on to watch something I have recorded there is no sound at all even on a programme that is live.

First question is what software version is the Humax using (Menu button> Settings> System> System information)?

It’s not many years ago that a number of channels moved to COM7 & 8 so I’m surprised to see C56 disappear. Signal quality is good so I’m somewhat puzzled.

As I understand COM8 has been discontinued. See the 20th June announcement on this link https://www.cai.org.uk/index.php/contact/news/17-dtt-freeview-updates

I managed to fix the problem.

It was due to my own foolishness.

I wasn’t pressing the blue button.

We all make silly mistakes at times. What you were describing was puzzling so thank you for providing the resolution.
